Rainiest months ? - hawaiideborah - 06-29-2011 Would any of you know where to find historical data on the rainfall amount in Puna (Kea'au and Pahoa) broken down by month? Having just moved here fulltime in the fall, I have been record keeping on rainfall and so far June has the most rain during the daytime. That was sure a surprise to me. I thought it would be March or April for the most rainfall. Thanks for any help, Deborah RE: Rainiest months ? - EightFingers - 06-29-2011 I used this: http://www.hawaiigaga.com/WeatherGuide.aspx RE: Rainiest months ? - hawaiideborah - 06-29-2011 THANK YOU for this link. This is exactly what I was looking for. Interesting that June is usually the driest month which was what I had thought in the past. This has sure been an unusual June. RE: Rainiest months ? - macuu222 - 06-29-2011 I think it has something to do with whether El Nino is present or not.... RE: Rainiest months ? - Kapohocat - 06-29-2011 The long range NOAA forecast issued a week or two ago said we have the weakening La Nina and about 1 deg below normal and slightly above normal percipitation, and that Hilo is still way below normal rainfall - 38" to end of May. RE: Rainiest months ? - robguz - 06-30-2011 Actually we are still quite a bit below normal for the month of June, Hilo at least. I think we've been in a drought for so long that a month that even gets close to normal rainfall feels like a lot. At least it's not 2009 when we got double normal for a lot of months. I use this site and look at the monthly calendar which gives you all the totals per day for a month. http://www.wunderground.com/history/airport/PHTO/2011/6/30/MonthlyHistory.html#calendar RE: Rainiest months ? - David Shaw - 07-01-2011 HPPDeborah: "June has the most rain during the daytime" Just did my aggregation for June here in Leilani and indeed, June higher than any month 2011 except March which was at 8.02 vs June 7.79. Rob sez "feels like a lot"-- and it sure does to me when only 2 days of the month were .00. Puts a crimp in yard work and a damper on my spirits... -dwajs RE: Rainiest months ? - Kapohocat - 07-01-2011 I am happy for the abnormal June rain down here. Being on catchment, for the first time in 8 yrs and in Kapoho, is a daring adventure and I was worried we would be ordering water by now. But nope, tank is 2" from completely overflowing full. You just never know what the Big Island is gonna get for rain in any year/month/day except for "partly sunny partly cloudy" is the only average I can see that holds true on any particular day. ETA: and its always going to rain about 7-9 PM on the 4th of July, and the week of the fair in Sept. RE: Rainiest months ? - hawaiideborah - 07-02-2011 quote: THIS LINK IS GREAT. Love it. Now bookmarked on my computer. Thank you so much. RE: Rainiest months ? - Kapohocat - 07-02-2011 Actual [June] month total 4.71 Normal month total 7.36 Am I reading Rob's link incorrectly or was June rain actually below normal? |
