Pu'u O'o rises - csgray - 07-07-2011 The short version of what is going on: After the floor of the crater collapsed, accompanied by curtains of fire outside of the crater, the crater has been slowly refilling. Most of that activity has been in the form of a perched lava lake that would fill, overflow, and refill (sort of a crater within the crater). The floor of the crater is now pretty close to the level it was before the floor collapsed, and that perched lake keeps doing its thing. For the last several days the whole floor of the crater has been rising, and now there is lava showing through cracks in the floor of the crater. The lowest side of Pu'u O'o is on the park side, and unless the bottom drops out again, my guess is the lava will bel spilling out of Pu'u O'o, and across VNP, within a week or two. Anyone want to start picking times for when the lava will emerge from the crater and flow across the pali again? Guesses would be need to be which day, because the Volcano experts won't always post more accurate data. My guess is Aug. 1, my father's birthday, Jerry Garcia's Birthday, and the due date for my first grandchild. A Leo should be born with fire! Carol RE: Pu'u O'o rises - Kapohocat - 07-07-2011 I'm going with your date Carol! One of my best friends from my salad days arrives on Aug 1.... with his wife of 25 years! It would be awesome for lava to be flowing! RE: Pu'u O'o rises - EightFingers - 07-08-2011 September 5th, 9AM RE: Pu'u O'o rises - David M - 07-08-2011 Not until after our company leaves, July 16th. LOL David Ninole Resident RE: Pu'u O'o rises - DanielP - 07-08-2011 I am going with Jerry's birthday. Can't think of a better reason! I sure miss Jerry. RE: Pu'u O'o rises - Radiopeg - 07-08-2011 I'll stick with Aug 1 because I didn't think anyone knew what salad days meant! Cory want's more lava into the sea, and my daughter is visiting, so, hopefully sooner, though, rather than later. quote: Life goes on, with you or without you. RE: Pu'u O'o rises - PaulW - 07-08-2011 http://volcanoes.usgs.gov/hvo/cams/POcam/ Probably looks better at night. I'll say July 31st, good way to end a month with 5 Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays that comes only once every 843.5 years (yes, yes, I know, just kidding) RE: Pu'u O'o rises - csgray - 07-08-2011 I find that just before sunset is a great time to check out the webcam, the walls of crater are sunlit, yet the red glow of the lava can also be seen. Once it is full dark the cameras switch to a low light system and everything is much fuzzier, although last night there were lava fountains bubbling up. Carol RE: Pu'u O'o rises - abe - 07-08-2011 Dang, i will be on the mainland during Jerry's B day. so i will guess, august 15th, the day i return! exciting times ahead! hey, those who love jerry, check out the puna events page under terrapin station at akebono! RE: Pu'u O'o rises - KeaauRich - 07-08-2011 I have guests coming on the 15th and leaving on the 19th, so I predict major flows staring on the 20th... I plan to take them to the park one day for the 50 cent tour, but since there's no visible lava above ground, is it worth being there after dark? |
