Species of Palms - dayna - 07-26-2011

Hello.

My husband's user name is terracore. We've purchased our three acres and are looking to start planting in some of the cleared area.

I have parrots that we'll be moving to the Island. My parrots currently enjoy fresh palm nuts that I have shipped to Alaska from a friend in Florida. I'd LOVE to plant my own palm trees to harvest the nuts myself.

My friend ships me Queen Palm nuts, Fan Palm nuts, Bismark Palm nuts, Christmas Palm nuts, Foxtail Palm nuts, as well as Pandanus and Royal Poinciana Seed Pods. Does anyone know which (if any) of these will grow? I think she also has some Canary Palms that she feeds the nuts to her birds but I've not had those shipped up here yet.

Any advice would be helpful, I'm hoping to have as many happy plants and trees as possible.

Oh and we will be at about 2800 feet asl, right up the street from Akatsua Orchid Farm.

And there are plenty of palm growers here to get the ones you want - at really great prices, too! Here's one guy we buy from: http://www.cheapestpalmsontherock.com/

Dayna, All of the plants named grow here, and some are easier & less expensive than others. (be aware that bringing in seeds & plants from some growers is one of the sure ways to import in nasty invasive bugs & plant diseases, so it is best to get plants locally & be sure they are clean!)

We have Christmas palm nuts most of the time & usually have about a hundred seedlings twice a year that give away, along with Pandan (screwpine) plants that have edible leaves...and yes, we are in an area with just about every imaginable pest, and we make sure plant material is cleaned before giving it away....

Thank you to everyone! I'm very excited to come in December and start working on our property. Hawaii is so much like Alaska (just warmer) that we already feel at home. Here in Juneau we have our property full of "alaskan" type plants, blueberry bushes, ferns, sitka spruce, etc. Other than adding lots of palms, we'd like our property in Hawaii to be the same, lots of naturally occuring plants. Smile

Can you tell how excited I am?!?

Dayne, welcome to the neighborhood. You will be just a few miles up the highway from us! Are there Hapu'u on your land. If not we have them in abundance. Aloha, Pam

OK...NORMALLY we have 2 sproutings of palms a year... but today I was in the yard by our Christmas (Manilla) palms & there are a whole bunch of little sprouts...I have already cupped 18, and run out of cups....
If I go & get more cups, do you want these little guys??? There may be 50 or more (most times there are more than what I think there are...).

If you check out HIPS' site at their resources section there is a great list of nurseymen in the area...

I have personally had interaction with Andersen, Floribunda, and Lundkvist and can only speak in the highest regard for their plant material.

Jerry Andersen's rental pad in Leilani is where we stay when we visit, they are top notch folks. I have purchased plenty of quality material from both him and his son.
Jeff Marcus over at Floribunda is world renowned for his variety of species and he is a real pioneer in bringing the rarest of palms to the market.
Bo-Goran Lundkvist is the president of the International Palm Society and has quite the collection of rare palms for a very fair price.

If you have time, and your host is willing, ask to tour their gardens. There are some real special palm collecitons on the BI.
