see the thread posted 7/23/11 "Target soft opening". Lots of comments in there.

Carrie,

I've been - in the other thread there seems to be a lot of support for it. My impression? It's big.

I'm concerned it will go the way of the Safeway next door. When Safeway opened it was wonderful but it's now back to being what it was in its old location. On my visit to Target I couldn't believe how many employees were on the floor, sometimes getting in the way. That's great, these people have jobs, but I don't see it staying this way - just like Safeway.

The grocery section is OK but when it comes to fresh food it has a very limited selection. If you want beer or wine then it's the place to go! As for other stuff, well, I asked several of the employees where I could find an SD card for my camera since it has an electronics section, and not one of them knew what I was talking about. When I found the right place on my own it didn't have anything I was looking for, including the SD card.

I think this place will last for a while simply because it's competition for Walmart, but have to admit my first visit might be my last for some time.

Just checked in briefly late the other night. I like that they have a decent selection of kitchen appliances - the thing I hate about Walmart is that they pretty much only have the cheapest (in all sense) brand, plus their own, which is also usually not great. Sometimes you just want something inexpensive, but it's good to have choices.

Tom - Maybe you didn't find the SD cards because my friend bought them all! lol he was saying what a good deal he got on them. i went there a few days after the opening but before the grand opening on Sunday. The deals that were good were really good with several items sold out or close to it.

bananas were $.26 each on Tuesday.
Lots of employees and no wait to check out.
Big store.

RE: Anyone Been to Target? - Bullwinkle - 07-28-2011

did a pass yesterday - bought the tp on sale and some lion coffee at 5.99 all in all not impressed.

- just another store selling "stuff" marketing models based on conspicuous consumption - most of the goods headed to the dumpster after short term use. & over use of pink and reds as a theme overdone.

last generations model - certainly not mine - grin I wish them well.

Bear and I went to Target yesterday, and only managed to spend $28, almost half of which was a jumbo pack of batteries for his cameras. The produce was very limited, but the bananas (as noted by Deborah) and onions were quite cheap. I spoke to the produce guy, and he told me they had sold out of some competitively priced items and were bulking up future orders. Milk was a good deal at the same price as WalMart and $.40 less than Safeway. Our main focus was on groceries (and those batteries,) so I will more closely check out the non-grocery departments as I need those items in the future. At this point, I doubt Target will be a stop on our weekly tour of Hilo grocery stores.

Tom, I agree with your comments on Safeway. We buy the same things we bought at the old store in mostly the same quantities. Now that the hooplah over the opening is over, we have found that prices on many Safeway items we routinely purchase have gone up significantly. This may be just general inflation or the luck of the draw as far as our purchases are concerned, but the price increases seem more at Safeway than we have experienced at other grocery stores. I would be interested to know if this is just our perspective or if it is shared by others.

I think Safeway's new pricing strategy is to wildly inflate prices then wildly discount them through weekly club card savings or "just for U" pricing. Individual item prices go up and down like the stock market, so you need to get a sense of what the "real" price of your item should be, and then watch the sales and everyday pricing to make sure you don't end up on the wrong side of the wave.

I get a good laugh sometimes when I see the "you just saved" total on my receipt -- when I see the starting point for the savings, I have to wonder just how dumb Safeway thinks I am (though I will admit, it's often a safe bet to never underestimate how dumb I am...)
