RE: T.S. Fernanda - Rob Tucker - 08-17-2011

There was another Hurricane Fernanda that approached the Big Island back in the nineties. Hilo was boarding up and taping it's windows and taking down signs getting ready for the blow. But it petered out and never came ashore.

RE: T.S. Fernanda - Carey - 08-17-2011

This is not a hurricane, yet, and probably will not do anything but cause weather here...esp since we are in between a large, but breaking up front NW & this tropical storm to the SE....either stormy weather or real clear... just depends on how the systems battle it out!

South swell, baby!

RE: T.S. Fernanda - Carey - 08-17-2011

Rob... it is interesting that 2 storms share the same name... I was not here in '93... but did look up the stats on the last one, although it turned north just over 300 miles from Hawaii Island, winds/waves did destroy one boat in Hilo Harbor & damaged 12 homes in Puna & one boat in Hilo Harbor... so best to be aware when these guys start heading our way!

Carey,

The names of storms get recycled every few years, I think it's six, so you'll see old ones reappear again. If a storm causes significant damage then the name gets retired. At least that's how I understand it and please don't ask me why!

RE: T.S. Fernanda - Daniel - 08-18-2011

I think the name is retired when a fatality occurs. Not sure. Getting ready though. Will be prepared.

The remnants are here...Have you noticed? No helicoptors. Ahhhh....

One Thing I can always be sure of is that things will never go as expected.

RE: T.S. Fernanda - Carey - 08-21-2011

There is a major amount of moisture from Fernada that is expected late tonight & Monday. The rain we have had so far is just the beginning. Link to the NOAA vapor image loop (interesting to note: this Fernada is also missing the island by about 300 miles... to the south this time & never made to the big-time hurricane status)):
