New air carrier to serve Hawaii - Allegiant - Rob Tucker - 04-18-2012 "Starting in late June, Allegiant will fly three times a week between Las Vegas and Honolulu and once a week between Fresno and Honolulu, at $174 each way. The average one-way fare at Honolulu International Airport is $363, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation." http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052702303815404577335950867973044.html RE: New air carrier to serve Hawaii - Allegiant - Bullwinkle - 04-18-2012 very cool - competition a good thing RE: New air carrier to serve Hawaii - Allegiant - macuu222 - 04-18-2012 I'm kind of leary about flying them after another upstart (Australian Air) did the same thing a few months back with incredable airfares and they folded overnight and everyone lost their money who bought tickets. How can an airline offer half the normal price air fares when fuel is the highest its ever been....and its still rising? RE: New air carrier to serve Hawaii - Allegiant - Bullwinkle - 04-18-2012 When Allegiant starts flying to Honolulu from Las Vegas on June 29 (a couple of days after McCarran’s Terminal 3 opens), it’s just the first phase of the company’s plans. Eventually, Allegiant could look at landing at Hilo or Kona on the Big Island, Kahului on Maui or Lihue on Kauai. It’s also considering other domestic airports from which to fly to Hawaii. So far, Las Vegas and Fresno, Calif., are the only mainland starting points. http://www.vegasinc.com/news/2012/apr/18/allegiant-shaking-las-vegas-hawaii-air-market-how-/ RE: New air carrier to serve Hawaii - Allegiant - grumpyscosmos - 04-18-2012 The more carriers that fly to mainland from Hilo the better...its such a relief not to have to drive someone to Kona for a 9pm flight, or fly to honolulu and pay a hundred extra each way. Or have to stay overnight in honolulu on a return trip because you fly in late.. “It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society.” " Krishnamurti " RE: New air carrier to serve Hawaii - Allegiant - terracore - 04-19-2012 quote: Australian Air made the mistake of jumping into stormy seas without learning how to swim first. Multiple international markets without enough cash or line of credit to purchase fuel during a time of rising fuel costs- insane. Airline startups could actually do well right now. They can hire a bunch of non-union employees and operate with a lower bottom line so long as they are clever enough to choose their markets carefully. RE: New air carrier to serve Hawaii - Allegiant - AKpilot - 04-20-2012 Hey guys, Don't worry about Allegiant going away. It's not a start up, been around for a while. I think they follow the EasyJet and Spirit Airline model and charge for just about everything but the seat. But they keep on expanding so it could be a cheap way to see family if you aren't lugging a ton of stuff. AKpilot We're all here, because we're not all there! RE: New air carrier to serve Hawaii - Allegiant - terracore - 04-20-2012 The reason these "budget" airlines are succeeding is because you know up front what you are going to get: nothing. Any other airline the value varies to much by route you never know if you are going to have to pay $2 for a soda or if you're going to get a free bag of pretzels thrown at you by an unhappy flight attendant. Most frequent travelers (like myself) tend to choose airlines with loyalty programs augmented by alternative ways to earn the miles (like using a credit card, or choosing hotels or rental cars) but people not in my rat race will usually go the cheapest route. If my loyalty program airline can't get me where I want to go, I'd rather pay less for nothing than pay more for who-knows-what. If a budget airline can crack the code on how to lure loyalty-program fliers away from their carriers, it will be the Next Big Deal. The airline that figures out how to get rid of the dreaded MIDDLE SEAT will be the Biggest Deal Ever. Anybody who has ever been sandwiched between two 300 pounders on either side knows what I'm talking about. The airlines are reluctant to make them buy two seats for afraid of getting sued, but the fact is that most Americans are wider than our counterparts elsewhere. Find a way for them to fit into their seats without overflowing into my seat and be competitive in the market, and I'll fly that airline exclusively. RE: New air carrier to serve Hawaii - Allegiant - mac nut - 04-20-2012 I agree Terracore. I new I was in trouble on a flight when a rather large lady plopped in the seat next to me and proceeded to eat a 3 course meal out of her huge carry on bag! mac nut RE: New air carrier to serve Hawaii - Allegiant - Bullwinkle - 04-21-2012 Pricing by the pound - the only fair way to charge for airfare - I'd also add a hefty surcharge for children - or keep them off the red eyes or in the back of the aircraft - grin assigned overhead bins would be a plus as well |
