The Maku'u Peoples Walkway - homer - 09-15-2011

Warm Alohas to all. In my travels up and down Maku'u, I am always amazed at the number of pedestrians and bicycles. With all the money spent on a park, why not a nice sidewalk like a GREENWAY for people to enjoy the walk in SAFETY. There would be places for shelter along the way.
Mahalo,

I think that question was asked before....and the reply was there is no money for it.

I have always believed that where there is a will, and especially when there is plenty of will, there is a way. I am not ready to conjure that just yet, but the idea is very sound, and at some point one good, clean, well written legislative/constitutional change might be able to slice through the bundle of contradictions, myths and impenetrable roots that passes for the law in Hawaii on this subject.

I was told Paradise has the most traffic of all the access streets (makuu, Paradise, Kaloli, Shower).
I suggest start with Paradise, the middle street not one of the outer streets. But that is pointless since there is no money and no plans for any sidewalk on any of these streets in HPP.

When you say "traffic".....do you mean vehicles or pedestrian? I believe Paradise has the most vehicle traffic...but I think Makuu has more bicycle and pedestrian traffic.....

Pointless until someone dies from walking or biking on the shoulder ... then all of a sudden there is plenty of $$ esp if the person that go whacked was of some importance. I think the same type of model can be seen when a light goes into an intersection. Seems X amount of people have to die before money that was not there is spent to install a signal.

I think it's a great idea. I am not sure what type of set backs from the road the state would have to work with, but... a paved bike / walking path going down the stretch to the ocean would be indeed nice and well used. Tho, it is a private subdivision so I would think it would need to be a community effort. Unlike the street going down through Ocean Beaches ... kahakai boulevard that is a public street and should have sidewalks.

The association is 24 mil in the hole ( with interest ) and only half the roads are getting paved

Unless the money falls from sky, it's a fantasy

Just the devil's advocate here (maybe just me) BUT, when people move here they KNOW what they are getting into from the get go. My real estate agent went over everything about HPP and I signed all kind papers to prove it. I was never under ANY illusions that there would EVER be any amenities and I was fine with that. If you bought here you must have signed the same papers and been fine with it too. I'm among those that like the rural feel and grew up on roads with out side walks. The more improvements made the more our property taxes go up. We ALL know that we'll never see any of those tax dollars come back this way. I like my catchment water and love the fact there are no street lights to block out the stars at night. I don't understand why people move here KNOWING what there moving to and then try to change it what they moved away from! If you wanted all those things, then why did you move here? OR, why didn't you move to Hilo? OK... These are MY feelings. I don't care if they step on your toes and don't give a damn anymore. Just quit bitching about it or move! Now you can flame me all you want. Damn.... where did the bottle of wine go??
