Gasoline prices - uneedawish - 09-21-2011
Does anyone know why gasoline prices keep going up even though oil is at $84.10 a barrel?
The local media and our Governor,(who I voted for), are silent on
this fact.
Related to this issue, my Heco bill also is slowly creeping up.
We use one 14 watt energy saving bulb at night, we are very careful
how we use electric items, still our last Heco bill was $244.00.
Thanks for anyones input on how to save on gas or electricity.
We are living on a fixed income!

Install a solar attic fan. Cost less than $1000.00 installed and it keeps your home cool even during the hottest part of the day. It eliminated the use of ceiling and floor fans which can add up

I asked this question on a financial markets forum. The response was the monitor the Brent oil prices instead of the one you see on CNN.com. supposedly it reflects oil prices to gas refineries more accurately and its still above $100 a barrel

We've parred our bill by turning off power boards at night, emptying the coffeemaker into a thermos to keep the coffee hot and turning off the coffeemaker, and being relentless about turning off lights when not needed.
Solar really does help.
Our electric hot water heater seldom kicks in because the solar does almost all of the work anyway and we keep the thermostat set about 120 deg F .
With a dry/compost toilet, we don't pump water to flush.
All appliances --refrigerator, washer, convection oven, dishwasher-- are energy star. Cooktop is 'magnawave' and much more efficient than other electric cooktops.
We don't use many power tools often and when we do it really shows up on the electric bill.
Net metered PV electric solar is great for us.
In August, we had a 'minimum bill' of $20.40.
-- twenty dollars and forty cents.
"153 kwh supplied by HELCO;"
"149 kwh received by HELCO from Net Energy Consumer" (that's us).
Three of our last ten bills have been 'minimum'.
Highest bill in last ten was Dec, 2010:
201 kwh supplied by HELCO
118 kwh received by HELCO from us
...it was cloudy in those days of shortening daylight hours and we also had house guests.

I thought maybe this was just a Hawaii issue and thought gas prices would be dropping dramatically as a result of the drop in the price of oil. Wrong on both apparently. Was just in the Bay Area where gas was about $.10 less per gallon.

Some of the top electric appliances here:
refrigerators, esp. older ones - always check the energy rating on these, as similar looking units can vary alot in the energy use...& keep the condenser dust free
water pumps, for well & catchment users.... a small leak can really add up the electric use
heating & cooling the air & water & cooking- check into lower energy use or solar appliances (ie:attic vent fans, solar water heat...)
Dishwashers - some of these have low energy use settings , but most have pumps & heaters that are energy hungry
even the TV can have huge energy fluxes - CRT & plasma screens are energy hogs, LED not so much & the size of the screen does matter....
