Stabbing with Hawaiian dagger - Radiopeg - 10-18-2011

Any one know if the guy arrested from Kea'au for the stabbing is the same guy from the Pahoa redistricting meeting? He was "Mikey" and looks familiar, but I spent more time trying to hear the computer audio than I watching, until he puled out that dagger.

Tiffany has a picture on her blog. Let us know if it is the same guy.

It is the same guy. Michael Glendon. I'm sooooo glad I didn't confront him and set him off!

So he was waving a knife around at a public meeting – and didn’t leave in handcuffs.
I’m glad I didn’t go to that meeting with my kids

It was a Hawaiian dagger which looks like a wooden paddle with embedded sharks teeth. People took it as a ceremonial prop and not a real threatening weapon.

I saw a clip on TV. He really seemed more confused than dangerous. But, I too am glad we didn't have to find out the hard way. The polite audience let him go on, even as he pulled the dagger from his britches. I did expect more of a rant, than build a playground for my children" spiel.

First, he pulled the 'dagger' out from under his shirt, not his pants. He did not make any threatening gestures with it. He actually put it down on the table in front of me as he was setting up the laptop for his testimony. He addressed me politely. He used the 'dagger' the way a talking stick is used - just held it. When the timer went off I asked him to complete his testimony, and he did so respectfully. At no time did I feel threatened. Please, folks, do not make a mountain out of a molehill.

From behind him, it looked more like he struggled to get his dagger from out of his waist band and shirt. But like I said, he did not do anything scary. It was a surprise, more than anything. I walked out at the end of the meeting thinking more "theater" than danger.

Rene, I get a different take on that incident that might should be considered as a caution on public safety. Your view is the ideal outlook as we usually want to think the best but it also puts you at risk. You want to believe you were not in any danger because you believe he only considered it a ceremonial object. However, his later alleged actions would prove he in fact thought of it as a weapon. In other words, yes you and the public were at risk. Whoever was in charge of security likely dropped the ball by not acting and you guys were just lucky. Make sure the person in charge of security learned from the event.

No, I was not there and my view could be wrong. I tend to look more at the safety and security aspect.

I'm with Oink on this one.

Weapon, ceremonial or not, has no place at a public meeting. Its great he used it for "drama" but given he later used it on someone as a weapon shows its unknown what his motives were for brandishing this at the meeting.

Think DeNiro in The Untouchables, baseball bat scene.
