In the order they were released ... ________ Puna shooting 10-22-11 Hawai#699;i Police Department Criminal Investigations Section, Area I Lieutenant Gregory Esteban Phone: 961-2252 October 22, 2011 C11027621 Media Release Big Island detectives are investigating an incident in Puna that injured a Kea#699;au man. Saturday (October 22) shortly after 2:40 a.m., Puna patrol officers responded to the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision to investigate a report of a victim with a gunshot wound. Upon arrival, police discovered a 36-year-old man with a head wound and determined that he sustained the injury following a brief confrontation involving at least three other local males and a teal colored sedan. Police learned that the victim sustained the injury when an occupant of the teal sedan shot at him while he was driving on Route 130 in the area of Ainaloa subdivision. Following the incident, the occupants fled the area in the suspect vehicle—described as possibly being similar to a Ford Escort or Nissan Sentra. Fire Department personnel took the victim to Hilo Medical Center, where he was treated for the injury and released. Detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigation Section are conducting further investigation into the incident, which is currently classified as second-degree attempted murder. No arrests have been made in connection with this investigation. Police ask that anyone with information about this case call Detective Robert Almeida at 961-2386 or the Police Department's non-emergency line at 935-3311. __________ Puna attempted murder 10-22-11 Hawai#699;i Police Department Criminal Investigations Section, Area I Lieutenant Gregory Esteban Phone: 961-2252 October 22, 2011 C11027603 Media Release Big Island detectives are investigating an incident in Puna that left a Kea#699;au woman hospitalized. [ ![]() RE: Home Invasion & Attempted Murder in Puna - JerryCarr - 10-22-2011 While both these incidents are deeply disturbing, I suggest we all take three deep breaths and consider the facts, which could be incomplete at this point, BTW. According to the on-line reports on the shooting, it did not happen in HPP. Apparently it took place on Highway 130 near Ainaloa, and the victim was able to drive to HPP where the police responded. He was treated and released from Hilo Medical Center. The assailants fled and are probably hiding out somewhere. The indident in which the elderly lady was injured did take place in HPP, but due to quick citizen response to her cries for help, the police arrived in time to arrest the alleged attacker. The lady's resistance and a very good response from both the neighbors and police likely prevented something worse from happening. She has been admitted to the hospital, and we all hope for her speedy recovery. It remains to be seen whether the assailants and victims in either case knew each other. Random violent crime is blessedly rare in these parts, but it could happen, most likely when drugs and/or mental illness are involved. I have emailed our Community Policing Officer requesting more facts and will pass them along as they become available. RE: Home Invasion & Attempted Murder in Puna - missydog1 - 10-22-2011 Thanks Jerry! ... as you can see, I posted the media release, which makes it clear that the shooting was on 130 and not IN HPP. I see the good points you stress about the excellent response to the woman's assault, but I have to say that glass is not half full for me even so ... I would not be surprised if the shooting involved guys who were having issues rather than random (still very bad that it happened). The in home assault blows my mind though ... pruning shears? Note to self: stay off the roads at 2:30 in the morning, weekends. RE: Home Invasion & Attempted Murder in Puna - birdmove - 10-23-2011 When it happens to you it is a life changing event. I have mentioned on the forum before that it happened to me one night in Wa. State almost 36 years ago, on Nov 1st (my birthday). There was no physical assault as I armed myself when I heard the glass breaking and held the dud at gunpoint until the Police arrived and took him away. I feel terrible for the lady in HPP, and I can imagine what she is going through. I live here too. There is no substitution for good fast thinking neighbors also. jon Jon in Puyallup, Wa. RE: Home Invasion & Attempted Murder in Puna - DTisme - 10-23-2011 I have yet to see what street the 69-yr-old lady lives. Does anyone know? RE: Home Invasion & Attempted Murder in Puna - JerryCarr - 10-23-2011 We do not have official confirmation, but a Neighborhood Watch Block Captain reported intense police activity on 14th between Paradise and Kaloli at the time this was reported. Our CPO was out sick yesterday, but is working on getting us more info. @Kathy: Thank you so much for posting the full releases. (You and I were posting at the same time, and you got in first.) The glass is not half full for me, either. This is an atrocious, devastating event for the victim. I felt the need to provide some perspective, especially given the fact that this thread is entitled "Man shot in HPP . . . ," and no one was shot in HPP. RE: Home Invasion & Attempted Murder in Puna - missydog1 - 10-23-2011 Agree, Jerry. (I should have noticed the time stamps too.) I don't see this as a sign that things are falling apart and heading for anarchy. In the past there was more violence in the area than there is now, and possibly more unreported violence as well. Overall, I think things are becoming better for the law abiding, not worse. When I looked at HPP property even eight years ago, it was very apparent that the nice houses were "on guard" and the overall feel was quite sketchy. It's changed a great deal. Ed - auto correct on phone turned nice houses into Iced houses, big difference! RE: Home Invasion & Attempted Murder in Puna - missydog1 - 10-23-2011 http://www.khon2.com/mostpopular/story/Elderly-Puna-woman-hospitalized-after-violent/VJQP_deiHU6LVbFw5J6HrQ.cspx KHON has a full story with her name and the ghastly details. It reads like an episode of Criminal Minds -- from the creepy sound of the door handle, to this poor woman fighting off a murderous attack. All the while her daughter in Maui is on the phone and hearing the whole thing, her mother screaming! The accused had a prior incident of trying to steal the victim's car (fingerprints found). ------- (for those on dial-up who can't do links and video) quote: RE: Home Invasion & Attempted Murder in Puna - kimo wires - 10-24-2011 I hope that this is not becoming a trend. Another home invasion in volcano. Three more idiots on the loose. .http://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/11568538/hawaii-island-police-seeking-suspect-who-used-stolen-credit-card One Thing I can always be sure of is that things will never go as expected. |
