Home Invasion & Attempted Murder in Puna - whalesong - 10-22-2011

This happen at 2:40 a.m and we are just now being informed we have 3 crazy men on the loose.

Police are still searching for the 3 suspect who shoot a man in HPP, they drove away in a teal sedan.
Read the article for details..

Looks like it's going to get more violent, sooner than we'd like.

Time to sharpen up on your self defense skills and have a can of wasp spray or maze handy, just in case. I like the wasp spray, because you get 25' away to shoot at them[Big Grin] and a good head start run, after you've temporarily blinded them.

Stay alert and be prepared..

Another case: Attack with pruning shears on elderly lady.
http://hawaiinewsdaily.com/ Home invasion attack in HPP too! Saturday,
Oct 22..

Is this subject better?...sorry for the misleading location confusion

Crazy!

Might as well post the alerts, because sometimes they get withdrawn.
In the order they were released ...

Big Island detectives are investigating an incident in Puna that injured a Kea#699;au man.

Saturday (October 22) shortly after 2:40 a.m., Puna patrol officers responded to the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision to investigate a report of a victim with a gunshot wound. Upon arrival, police discovered a 36-year-old man with a head wound and determined that he sustained the injury following a brief confrontation involving at least three other local males and a teal colored sedan.

Police learned that the victim sustained the injury when an occupant of the teal sedan shot at him while he was driving on Route 130 in the area of Ainaloa subdivision. Following the incident, the occupants fled the area in the suspect vehicle—described as possibly being similar to a Ford Escort or Nissan Sentra.

Fire Department personnel took the victim to Hilo Medical Center, where he was treated for the injury and released.

Detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigation Section are conducting further investigation into the incident, which is currently classified as second-degree attempted murder. No arrests have been made in connection with this investigation.

Police ask that anyone with information about this case call Detective Robert Almeida at 961-2386 or the Police Department's non-emergency line at 935-3311.

Big Island detectives are investigating an incident in Puna that left a Kea#699;au woman hospitalized.

Saturday (October 22) shortly after 12 a.m., Puna patrol officers responded to the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision to investigate a report of a woman screaming for assistance. RE: Home Invasion & Attempted Murder in Puna - JerryCarr - 10-22-2011

While both these incidents are deeply disturbing, I suggest we all take three deep breaths and consider the facts, which could be incomplete at this point, BTW. According to the on-line reports on the shooting, it did not happen in HPP. Apparently it took place on Highway 130 near Ainaloa, and the victim was able to drive to HPP where the police responded. He was treated and released from Hilo Medical Center. The assailants fled and are probably hiding out somewhere.

The indident in which the elderly lady was injured did take place in HPP, but due to quick citizen response to her cries for help, the police arrived in time to arrest the alleged attacker. The lady's resistance and a very good response from both the neighbors and police likely prevented something worse from happening. She has been admitted to the hospital, and we all hope for her speedy recovery.

It remains to be seen whether the assailants and victims in either case knew each other. Random violent crime is blessedly rare in these parts, but it could happen, most likely when drugs and/or mental illness are involved. I have emailed our Community Policing Officer requesting more facts and will pass them along as they become available.

Thanks Jerry! ...

as you can see, I posted the media release, which makes it clear that the shooting was on 130 and not IN HPP.

I see the good points you stress about the excellent response to the woman's assault, but I have to say that glass is not half full for me even so ...

I would not be surprised if the shooting involved guys who were having issues rather than random (still very bad that it happened).

The in home assault blows my mind though ... pruning shears?

Note to self: stay off the roads at 2:30 in the morning, weekends.

When it happens to you it is a life changing event. I have mentioned on the forum before that it happened to me one night in Wa. State almost 36 years ago, on Nov 1st (my birthday). There was no physical assault as I armed myself when I heard the glass breaking and held the dud at gunpoint until the Police arrived and took him away.

I feel terrible for the lady in HPP, and I can imagine what she is going through. I live here too. There is no substitution for good fast thinking neighbors also.

I have yet to see what street the 69-yr-old lady lives. Does anyone know?

RE: Home Invasion & Attempted Murder in Puna - JerryCarr - 10-23-2011

We do not have official confirmation, but a Neighborhood Watch Block Captain reported intense police activity on 14th between Paradise and Kaloli at the time this was reported. Our CPO was out sick yesterday, but is working on getting us more info.

@Kathy: Thank you so much for posting the full releases. (You and I were posting at the same time, and you got in first.) The glass is not half full for me, either. This is an atrocious, devastating event for the victim. I felt the need to provide some perspective, especially given the fact that this thread is entitled "Man shot in HPP . . . ," and no one was shot in HPP.

RE: Home Invasion & Attempted Murder in Puna - missydog1 - 10-23-2011

Agree, Jerry. (I should have noticed the time stamps too.)

I don't see this as a sign that things are falling apart and heading for anarchy. In the past there was more violence in the area than there is now, and possibly more unreported violence as well. Overall, I think things are becoming better for the law abiding, not worse.

When I looked at HPP property even eight years ago, it was very apparent that the nice houses were "on guard" and the overall feel was quite sketchy. It's changed a great deal.

Ed - auto correct on phone turned nice houses into Iced houses, big difference!

http://www.khon2.com/mostpopular/story/Elderly-Puna-woman-hospitalized-after-violent/VJQP_deiHU6LVbFw5J6HrQ.cspx

KHON has a full story with her name and the ghastly details. It reads like an episode of Criminal Minds -- from the creepy sound of the door handle, to this poor woman fighting off a murderous attack.

All the while her daughter in Maui is on the phone and hearing the whole thing, her mother screaming!

The accused had a prior incident of trying to steal the victim's car (fingerprints found).

(for those on dial-up who can't do links and video)

What a scary night for an elderly Big Island woman.

Police say she was at home when a man broke into her house and attacked her.

The woman survived the attack and is recovering thanks to her daughter.

The victim lives alone in a home in the Paradise Park subdivision of Puna and was on the phone with her daughter when she was attacked.

Around 11 o'clock Friday night, 69 year-old Mary Davy was sleeping when she heard strange noises outside her home.

Afraid, she called her daughter on Maui.

"They jiggled the door handle or something and so my sister told her put something in front of the door and call 911," said the victim's daughter, Valerie Matsuda.

Matsuda says the suspect kicked the door open and started attacking her mother with gardening shears.

She says her younger sister, Suzanne, remained on the phone in horror, listening to her mother fight for her life.

"Basically she could just hear my mom screaming you know at the guy and you know just could hear the guy stabbing my mom," Matsuda says."My mom fought him off as much as she could and was able to get the shears out of his hands...I'm totally not surprised at all, she's very feisty."

During the ordeal Suzanne called the police from another phone.

"Finally he got her on the ground had his knee on the back of her head and she was twisting her neck her face was already cut and lacerated and he was stabbing her and she knew he was going to break her neck and kill her," Matsuda says.

That's when the victim heard the police running up the stairs, and the suspect fled with her purse.

"He beat her she's black and blue and it was just terrible for no reason she's going to be 70 this year in December and she doesn't even kill bugs," Matusda says.

Matsuda says her mother suffered severe head injuries and was taken to Hilo Hospital in critical condition.

Police located and arrested an 18 year-old man who was hiding in a nearby home where they say he lives.

He was arrested for burglary in the first degree and attempted murder in the second degree.

"Our records have shown although they don't know each other personally. there have been a prior incident involving both individuals," said Lt. Greg Esteban of the Hawaii County Police Department.

The victim's daughter says the suspect tried to steal her mother's car in August, police found his finger prints on the vehicle.

"She's doing well but got some horrible scars that she's going to have to live with for the rest of her life on her face, her lips and her mouth," Matsuda says.

Police say the suspect is being held at the East Hawaii Detention Facility while they investigate.

He has not yet been charged with either crimes.

I hope that this is not becoming a trend. Another home invasion in volcano. Three more idiots on the loose.
