My House was Haunted - Kelena - 10-31-2011

I am the third owner of my house. The second owner, Terry, was a vivid personality (surprise!) who made many creative changes to the house. Some of them contributed to what makes the house unique and unusual; others were ill-advised, such as a backwards renovation of the ohana, taking it from a complete independent living area with bath and kitchen to a room with no bathroom or kitchen but with an improbably placed slipper bathtub, Tuscan tile, and a non-functioning and unpermitted double-sided fireplace.

He was fascinated by fire and the house showed some damage as a result. The double-side fireplace was double blown out -- there was little left of either of the two glass doors. The fireplace was filled with glass shards.

Inside the house, candle-fire left its mark on the walls in the living room and the master bedroom. The front lawn had a large burned-out area from where he had made a bonfire on the lawn. When the volunteer fire department showed up, he allegedly punched the captain of the fire department. He was charged with battery.

I had had my eye on the house for some time as a model of the kind of house I wanted to build. I marked it so I would get automatic updates on the home.

And then the price dropped precipitously and dramatically. I was already in escrow on raw land, but I had lost the stomach for building while off-island. The price kept dropping and suddenly, I was in the game. I talked to my partner, told him that I wanted to retire early and that I wanted his cooperation in making this house our own. I reminded him that I had put him through nursing school and he agreed that I could retire early while he continued to work for another 15 years or so.

I learned that Terry had died when his Hummer vehicle went over a cliff. Some said "suicide"; others said "accident". Although he typically wore a lavalava (sarong) on the property and probably had one on when he drove to the cliff on Beach Road very early one morning, he was found naked. The Hummer was lifted from below by a crane. There was a picture in the Hilo-Tribune of the Hummer dangling from a cable attached to the crane.

I came over to see the house. It was a glorious day with a robin's egg blue sky. I was entranced (which happens easily to me), despite the fact that there was some damage to the house.

When I came back through the house, I noticed a white bible underneath a hanging lamp (which I have since removed). The bible was gleaming and lay open. I flipped to the front. There was a dedication: To Terry and (his wife): I know that you will be together forever. Congratulations on your marriage.

But I knew this was a false prophesy. The marriage ended in divorce. the fact that the bible was in such a prominent place, with special lighting said something to me.

In the corner of the living room was a table with a shadow box on it. The shadow box contained a length of rope with a letter behind it. The letter was to an unknown woman from another unknown woman and indicated that this was a piece of the rope that had been used to hang the husband of the woman who wrote the letter.

The hair stood up on the back of my neck as I read the letter. I let my eyes travel up and down the rope and wondered why someone would feature such a macabre souvenir in a corner of such a beautiful home.

Both my agent and I sensed a presence in a particular corner of the room.

I shrugged it off. Escrow closed and my now ex-partner and I scheduled a trip over. I arrived first and he was to arrive 3 days later.

Everything went beautifully in my first day in the home. And then came nightfall. For those mainlanders who have never fallen asleep in an island home, the sounds and sensation are completely different. You can very much tell that you are on a remote island and, in the case of the Southeast part of the Big Island, you can feel the presence of the volcano, or more correctly, your presence on the volcano, in a way that is difficult to explain, but which is covered by the Hawaiian word "mana".

I am a highly rational and logical person, thanks to my father; I am also superstitious, sensitive, and keenly aware of things unseen, thanks to my mother.

As I went to bed for the first time in my new home, I felt a very strong presence in the master bedroom. I shrugged it off because the entire experience was new and strange: the ocean was crashing, palms were rustling outside, horrid little tree frogs were chirping.

I turned off the light, commanded myself not to think of the history of the home and fell into a deep sleep.

And then I awoke. I was face down and couldn't catch my breath. I heard footsteps on the gravel outside the window.

I could hear a pounding sound: the beating of my own heart. And then, I realized the light was on -- the one I had turned off.

I was face down and had to dare myself to raise my head up and to turn around. I caught an intake of air and slowly raised my head. I could see the shadow of my head sharply delineated against the wall. I cocked my head to the left.

The shadow of my head went to the right.

And that was when I bolted out of bed.....

And a magnificent Samhain to you as well, Glen!
Love your story, all the details.

I too have a rational father and a mother who believes ... in many things.

Not sure you want to know this, but there is a website that claims Terry was murdered, put in the Hummer, and that it was pushed off the cliff.

I am not very interested in ghosts at all, but I felt a presence once. I was in a room with a friend talking to her, and I turned around because she suddenly put her hand on my shoulder. Only she was not in the room after all. When I told her, she shrugged. "Just my brother who died in the bedroom," she said. The bed I was sleeping in too ...

Time to play some Loreena McKennitt.

The aurora borealis, beautiful light and sunset/sunrise shots all in one fantastic Celtic video. What more could a Celtic astronomer living in Hawaii who loves taking sunset pictures want?!

Thank you!

Hmmm, maybe that wasn't the wind that locked the door shut behind me the first night there. Terry must have been laughing, seeing me stuck halfway thru the window trying to get back in.

.....oh, sorry, Carrie....and then I turned around and there was nothing there, of course. Just the wind. BWAH HAH HAH HAH HAH.

No, not aware of the website, KathyH. I would like to see it. What is remarkable about Terry is the strength of the reaction you get to him. It is very, very strong.W When it comes to rumors and getting to know people, the island should be called The Small Island. Many people I ran into knew Terry. If you mentioned his name, often people's faces would cloud over vivibly. Anger was a typical reaction.

But then there are people who think he was the nicest person they had ever met, bar none. And all agreed he was wonderful with his children. He loved them very much.

Terry's spirit left the house finally...with the white rabbit that inhabited the land. When I came over and I didn't see the white rabbit, the feeling of the house changed completely. I found the house very spooky until the point when the rabbit disappeared. There was a correlation between the rabbit and the presence, and then the absence, of the ghost.

Some personalities are so strong they bend space and time, like a wormhole. I prefer these animated spirits, whether positive or negative. I named the house after him: Hale Lavalava. He is gone now.

But just so I don't get locked out of my house naked, I am going to fix those doors, first thing!

RE: My House was Haunted - hawaiideborah - 11-01-2011

love the story.
thanks for sharing.

When we were looking to buy property on the side of HPP off Maku'u (south toward Pahoa way) had lots of "mana".
My best friend has lived here all her life and has lots of "vibes". We took her along to "vibe it" the places we thought we might want to buy. The places we looked at in the area from about 16th down to the beach off Maku'u that dead end where the areas she felt the strongest "vibes". Long ago "vibes" (not recent). They were left over from the Hawaiian wars which were fought here.

Only once did we all feel the same "vibe". We pulled up to a new house not yet finished being built, but on the market. It looked so sweet nestled in the trees and set back from the road. As soon as we pulled in the beginning of the drive my friend shouted out to back up, pull out, so I stopped the car to maybe talk this over. At that point the whole are went from sunny to dark and the place looked sinister. It was very eery. I haven't ventured down that street since. When we got out of there my friend said that she had the feeling "vibe" that this was the site of severe torture during the Hawaiian wars where many had been mutilated. Not a good picture to think about, let alone live by.

She "vibed" a lot of houses and property for us after that and we finally settled in a place with NO "vibe" history.

It is just my friend, and she does not consider it a gift. It is something she has always had. Her father was a Filipino healer (with his hands) so maybe it comes from him.

There are for sure places here on the Big Island that hold a lot of energy or mana. I can feel it in certain places. Sometimes it is so positive and sometimes it is not.

YES. Woke up this am and decided to check in with punaweb.
I spent the evening with friends listening to Loreena McKennitt as I do most every Halloween.
She is remarkable. I love Ireland. Was stationed in England for a stretch and made it over to Ireland every break I had. Fell in love there with the Irish sole and the Irish shore and of course, an Irish lass. It almost had me stay, but Hawaii is my home. Ireland is my sole.
