Gun question - dayna - 11-06-2011 So we were looking to take our small 22 hand gun to our property with us. Does anyone know the rules? Regs? I'm excited about following rules, I just want to make sure I follow them. We are having a contianer delivered, and I assumed I'd leave my 22 handgun there. In Alaska we don't require any permits, or concealed permits. So any help is welcome! I don't plan on using it. I've had one here for 16 years and only fired it at the range. BUT I have a few guns and know how to use them. Dayna www.AvianNation.com RE: Gun question - Rob Tucker - 11-06-2011 The Police Department knows the rules. Best to start at the source and not depend on casual rumors. RE: Gun question - Norm - 11-06-2011 Dayna, You have to take the hand gun to the Police Dept. to register it ,back ground check on you and finger printed takes about weeks or a month to get it back! RE: Gun question - Radiopeg - 11-06-2011 There is time limit on how long you have before you register your firearms. We called to get directions on the last day, and were told, we're really swamped bring them in the next day. Also they were friendly and did not keep anything. We had long guns and hand guns. Our records were squeaky and guns were all federally registered. So, we spent maybe an hour there. They put the info into a data base so that when they send an officer to an address they can advise them of weapons. Admittedly, only the honest ones show up, but it was never a hassle for us. So read the rules, expect to follow them and if you have no problem, you go home with your property the same day. RE: Gun question - Carey - 11-06-2011 Hawaii County Police firearm link includes importation: http://www.hawaiipolice.com/firearm-registration/index.html RE: Gun question - Puma - 11-06-2011 Hello Dayna, I am glad you have concern as I figure you are from Alaska. The rules are on the NRA site any time you have a legal question or have any firearm question. I will tell you what I have experienced. Not a rumor or second hand.. They are dead set against a concealed weapon permit..Even Magnum P.I. would be turned down and he is big time NRA..No one has told you yet you have to sign a paper allowing them to look into your health/medical records...Ya ever been admitted for lunacy? Depression? You see where I'm going? It will be like Radio Peg says...The rule is to register the firearm within 24 hours of the arrival or possession. They are not concerned with the 24 so much as one would think..Again, When you call the registration office you will be treated very well. Bring it in unloaded and at least a cable lock or trigger lock..In a bag, box, case, but not just in your hand or worse your pocket..Now they want you to call them every time you are transporting the firearm, to a range or hunting area, the roads you will take and so on...You do not just put it in your car and drive to the beach or anywhere other than to where they know you are going..NEVER CARRY THE GUN for any other reason...If you need personal protection, and who does not, these days, I suggest what I learned in Washington. Your gun is for your castle only...Make sure you have 1000 rounds.(My Pappy taught me) More people are killed by the 22 than any other round. YOU MAY PURCHASE OVER THE COUNTER, PEPPER SPRAY AT J.Haras' Store in Kurtistown. I was wrong about that.. and don't know just what they say about stun guns vs. Tazer Pistols..Tazer-Lunches Via Compressed air two darts into a person. Stun guns you must apply.. I suggest you do what a grey hair old lady showed me.."Mam? Why Do you you have wasp and hornet foaming spray on your desk?" She smiled, and said, if some hooligan wants to give me trouble, he or she is going to the hospital and not some garden hose!" get my drift? I think they are under 5 bucks and shoot 20 feet or so..Now Do the Police, have some strange quirks here? yup! I listen to a scanner all the time as I am into ham radio and Disaster Relief. The "Popo's" (a term of endearment?) have the strangest attitude towards, Pigs, the real oinkers..I have heard what seemed to me a plea for "any pig hunter" would come by so we didn't have to fill out paperwork for discharging our firearm...With that said, you will either find them all business or very friendly..They truly have the worst job here. Now if you like you can take as many as four (2 per person?) {Vague at best} firearms in your baggage, BUT you must announce that fact as soon as you get to the airport and they had better be cable locked in a locked box like a briefcase. They are Very used to this even though you are not...They will likely not even open the box, instead swabbing the entire suitcase, for explosives..Ya get on going wow that was weird.. I hope you found this helpful.. OK..Wow! There is more input than I had expected.. Dayna? Please don't let confusion, sway your decision."A confused Mind says, No." First And Upmost. Never Take Advise from This type of forum..Anyone with spite or not, may lead you from what you are.. Always Be totally open and above board with your Lethal Weapon, when it comes to the law...Do Not Even Take my Word...You have far too many resources to rely on this system.. NRA, Local Police Departments, The rules as written in the law books, are all going to tell you what you can and can't do here or anywhere. Even The Store I mentioned in here would be able to answer some of your more personal questions... IF you have no reason to worry about your record or paperwork for your ownership of the gun you own, registered in your prior state, you can just declare it with your check in luggage and be done with it.. They do sell Handguns here and they are expensive.. So if you don't like the extra stress, of something new at the airport (They make it painless) just buy one here...Not what I would do...I bring it because I have nothing to hide. and they know it..So relax and enjoy never having to worry about what goes "Bump in the night". Aloha Kn6zu... Just An Old Hippie trying to live by the golden rule.. RE: Gun question - edmond - 11-07-2011 I believe that you can ship the gun if you break it apart (ship the lower and slide separately) I would strongly suggest that you do not go to the police department. This matter is no concern of theirs. RE: Gun question - csgray - 11-07-2011 Edmond is giving very poor advice. A friend of mine didn't get around to registering several guns that his father had left him, along with the rest of the contents of his house and outbuildings. When a vindictive neighbor informed the cops of the guns (he had sold them to the dad) it turned into a several year long legal nightmare for my friend. The final sentence was 5 years strict probation, random urine tests where he has 1 hour to report for the test if called (even if he is at work), and then another 5 years of looser probation. The guns were not used in any crime, my friend was not accused of any crime other than possession of unregistered guns, and had a clean record until all this happened. The cops and prosecutor said they would have let him off if he had gone in himself to register the guns even several years late, but because he did not deal with it until the guns were reported he got the full weight of Hawaii's gun laws dropped on him. If you own guns in Hawaii make sure you know the laws and follow them, the state takes gun crimes very seriously, and the prosecutors play hardball. Carol RE: Gun question - Radiopeg - 11-07-2011 Not reporting your firearms is a felony here. One has to make their own decisions about that, as any other law you choose to follow or not. RE: Gun question - dayna - 11-07-2011 Well I won't be commiting any felonies. My husband would lose his job (not to mention that I'm a law follower lol). I'm going to leave the guns in Alaska for now till I have a better idea of what to do. Dayna www.AvianNation.com |
