Any dog parks/trails/beaches around Puna? - wonderkine - 03-10-2007 I'm looking for places in Puna (preferably) where I can take my dog kids (3 big ones) out to run and frolic without imposing their doggy goodwill on humans who aren't inclined to appreciate it. It would be great to have a dog beach or a day/time where dogs could play on a beach or cliffside, or whatever. Any other dog lovers in Puna who know where to go let the dogs run? I've taken them to South Point and that's lovely, but a little far for regular visits. Mahalo, Z RE: Any dog parks/trails/beaches around Puna? - Carey - 03-10-2007 The beach thing in Puna will be real hard to find, but there are a couple that are very off the beaten track. I would not advise even finding a sandy beach, as a couple have some wicked currents, and a couple are sea turtle nesting sites, & dogs & endagered turtles do not mix. There are a a few boulder beaches, but these are ankle breakers. Most of the shoreline is lava cliffs, and if your dogs won't run off, you can just run with them along the shoreline (we used to run our old neighbor's dog, plus side is that the toenails get worn down) Aloha, Carey RE: Any dog parks/trails/beaches around Puna? - ericlp - 03-10-2007 sadly there aren't too many beaches that are dog friendly. I'm kinda looking for the same. I guess until I get a fence around my property that is going to be the dog park! I was thinking maybe we could get like 100 dog owners in puna and buy some acreage and turn it into a dog park. I'd be for it... RE: Any dog parks/trails/beaches around Puna? - Brad W - 03-11-2007 South from the lighthouse about 10 minutes or so, and a few hundred yards before you get to the Pond, is a very small beach on the left which our three really enjoy. The sand is black and gets hot so I go early. I'm carefull to look for turtles, as Carey pointed out, and I always pick up. Also, and please don't think I'm preachin here, please consider taking along a litter sack, and doing some military style policing. I think it would be cool if that activity became synonymous (had to look that one up) with Punawebers. Just a thought. RE: Any dog parks/trails/beaches around Puna? - jm minica - 03-11-2007 Malama keys is another good doggy spot. We camped there friday night and brought our dogs along, and they loved it. It's not a beach at the water, the sand is actually on the inside of the lava that runs along the ocean. There's alot of room for dogs to run and play and tide pools and stream for them to get wet in. It's just past McKensey state park(coming from the pohiki side), a little dirt road to the makai side, and most vehicles can make it all the way down to the ocean(my full size van with minimal ground clearnce made it just fine). Aloha, Mark RE: Any dog parks/trails/beaches around Puna? - robguz - 03-13-2007 New Kaimu, but don't let them actually go swimming. Might be safe for them to run along a bit in the surf though. Kehena, but go very early when there are not a lot of people around so they won't be disturbed. People bring dogs there all the time, even when it's busy, but they tend to be medium or smaller. |
