61 Senators Betrayed you today - whalesong - 11-30-2011

I posted this Bill before it was voted on, but it was removed.

61 senators betrayed you today. They authorized, as an amendment to the Defense Authorization act, the indefinite suspension of Habeus Corpus. We are now officially a police state. Read the Amendment provision here. The house version of the bill is available here, 920 pages. Senate tex

We have become the thing we claimed we despised. All of the crimes we claim are being committed by other countries are crimes we are committing ourselves. We torture, kidnap, bomb, murder, intimidate, abuse and terrify all in the name of “national security”. We destabilize economies, deprive entire countries of food, medicines, even water for refusing to submit to what we want. We overthrow governments and assassinate their leaders and then install puppet governments to do our bidding.
I have to wonder if at some point if other countries will band together and declare the US a terrorist organization, guilty of crimes against humanity, war crimes, human rights violations and a threat to world peace.

Where is their integrity in leading us toward world peace?

Is there anything in the way of response, that our local government or citizens groups can do? Even something as mild as an official condemnation would be something.

If our right to habeus corpus truly has been banned, then any number of civic groups would be amenable to speaking out, perhaps.

Rotarians, Quakers, Arlo Guthrey fans.

See how our senators voted here! How to remedy this locally is to sign the petition to have Obama veto the bill as he promised! Let's see if he'll keep his word, this time!

Could you please quote the part of the text that suspends habeus corpus?

RE: 61 Senators Betrayed you today - Midnight Rambler - 11-30-2011

Here is the text of the relevant section: http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/F?c112:1:./temp/~c112RvPxWj:e462417:

whalesong's reporting of it is wrong; the Senate actually rejected the amendment, which was to remove this section (which basically just reaffirms the status quo) and replace it with a requirement that the security apparatus justify the legal basis for detentions (text here, scroll down to SA1107: http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/F?r112:1:./temp/~r112taW0u9:e129150:).

So yes, the Senate, including our man Dan Inouye, voted to keep letting the terrorists win, but nothing actually changed. And until voters and legislators stop wetting their pants when they see a guy in a turban, nothing will.
