May I ask what you folks do for fun? - condoman - 12-16-2011

May I ask what you folks do for fun? Ok it is obvious there is no night life here. Not much else to do in daytime unless you are very connected with ocean, like swimming, surfing, boating, fishing etc. What if you do not do these things? What do you do? Television? Rent movies. Drink? It has been my experience that most have to cope with living here by drinking

I used to live in Maine. Quite different but very cold.Very similar country lifestyle.

Say what? What do you mean "most have to cope with living here by drinking"?
I don't cope with living here. I relish living here. I am thankful every day (even in the rain[Big Grin]) that I am wise enough and lucky enough to have chosen Puna as my place to live. My only regret is that I didn't move here 30 years ago when I first started talking about moving to Hawaii. Cope? I absolutely love the people who are drawn to move here, the local people who are from here, the culture and history, the language, the tropical plants, the lava, the ocean, the sun and the temperature. The only thing I cope with in the last 15 months of full time living here is the most recent days of rain with no break. That's it. and as we all know without the rain, we would look like Kona.
Now for the next part, your experience is that most people here drink? That is not my experience at all. I don't drink and I don't know one person who "drinks to cope with having to be here". If that is your experience, I suggest you expand your horizons and get new friends.

I get up early - usually just about daybreak and go to bed earlier than I did on the mainland. So needless to say last year we celebrated New Years's on PST with good friends and good food on my deck!

WOW, you must be young or something. Most of us retired folk have so much to do, we don't worry about having excess time. Days just fly by - no need to cope.
Maybe it has something to do with building a house and having property...

RE: May I ask what you folks do for fun? - rusty h - 12-16-2011

get involved in a church, go to high school activities and support the local teams, check out the different places to volunteer. scuba Sundays is a good place to start meeting cool people. when in Hawaii i find myself heading to bed around 9 and up at 5:45 so really wasn't in search of a night life. meeting and hanging with people is a good start to a night life. peace

I'm retired and travel all over the world whenever I feel like it. I worked hard my whole life and made goals when I was young. One of those goals was to retire here. And now I sit back and enjoy life here in Puna. Working on my piece of property gives me purpose and pleasure. I don't need anything else.
