Something's eating my coconuts - rbakker - 12-26-2011

The coconuts falling out of my tree seemed very green so I had a look and discovered they were hollow - except for some liquid and a cloud of fruit flies. Each has a hole in the top, where it was connected to the tree.

What do you think it was, rats? Probably; we do have them here and I have seen them in that tree. But my question is - do you think the rats eat them while they are in the tree or on the ground? I'm going to lay a trap on the ground anyway. I figure if they're eating them in the tree, aren't they risking having the coconuts give way underneath them?

I've been told they eat them in the tree. You may want to put an aluminum band around the tree to keep them out.

Sorry to hear about the rat problem. Are yo sure it's the rats?? Have you caught any yet?? I hope its not the flies they would be harder to get rid of but not impossible

A rat problem is usually the symptom of a feline deficiency... [Wink]

I'm sure there are rats, I've seen them in that tree. It's probably them eating the coconuts; otherwise: mongoose?
An aluminium band wouldn't help, they walk along the branches and the electrical wires nearby (seen that too).

Nothing is eating my coconuts. They just hang there, unmolested.

RE: Something's eating my coconuts - flytraps - 01-12-2012

Well another way to to get to the coconuts before the rats do, after they hit the ground. Or invest in a few cats like the earlier suggestion. Please keep us informed of how you get rid of all your pests.

RE: Something's eating my coconuts - flytraps - 01-16-2012

Well we haven't heard anything have you gotten rid of your problem?? If you have how did you do it??

RE: Something's eating my coconuts - rbakker - 01-21-2012

I'm using a ratzapper but it's shorting out. I wouldn't let cats roam freely as it's bad news for the native bird population. The problem's been resolved temporarily by removing all the coconuts.

RE: Something's eating my coconuts - flytraps - 01-29-2012

I never heard of a rat zapper, only a fly zapper, mosquito zapper. Well you can't have cats. What about regular old rat traps?? Or would they harm the birds possibly as well???
