Hangin' in Puna - ArtM - 03-15-2007

My family will be vacationing in East Hawai`i from Apr. 21-May 8. We are staying in HPP the entire time. We have two daughters, ages 4 and 1. Our four-year-old has been to the Big Island twice, but this our youngest's first visit. My wife and I have been to the Big Island five or six times, depending on which person you're talking about!

Anyway, with that preamble, I would like find out if and Punaweb members are planning a gathering while we are there. We'd like to meet some of you!

Also, will the Hilo dive club meeting be held on May 6? My wife and I won't have the gear for diving, but would be up for meeting and talking story with some fellow divers.

Finally, we're interested in any off-the-beaten path events or things to do on the East Side. We've done most/all of the typical tourist things during past visits, so we're looking for more low-key, unusual, or lesser-known events and places to visit. Events "closer to the culture," such as a neighborhood lu`au, will be gleefully considered.

OK, rambled on long enough... Mahalo for any response!

Aloha,

ArtM

PS Yes, we intend to become Puna residents in the future.

Art, great to hear from you. If you would like to meet a bunch of us at one time you could hold the spring Puna Web party at your rental in HPP. The menu us “Pot Luck” and all attending usually bring what’s needed, there fore no cost to your family. Also, we all help around the house and leave no mess behind.
Think about meeting us Punatics and getting a bunch of info at one time.
We are scheduled to dive on April 6th and would love you guys to attend.

Scott,

Thanks for the grin. I had already considered proposing the "potluck at our place" to my wife!

A little confusion crept into your response. You stated that Hilo divers are scheduled to dive on Apr. 6. Did you really mean May 6?

Mahalo,

ArtM

RE: Hangin' in Puna - Kahunascott - 03-15-2007

Yes Art I did mean May. I'm working on a construction schedule with about 70 tasks and It's an April schedule. April, April, April is all that's in my mind right now.
Either way with the party I would like to meet you on the MAY outing.
Have a great day.

Merrie Monarch is the week after Easter!

RE: Hangin' in Puna - Carey - 03-16-2007

Carrie, are you guys going? This is a little early for Art's trip.
The Merrie Monarch Festival always begins on Easter Sunday and will run from April 8 to April 14, 2007. Last year was our first year there, it is wonderful, but the full festival is a marathon on the sitting muscles (for those of you that may have notices the stadium seat for sale in stores recently...that is why). Info from the festival website:

"The week-long festivities begin with a Ho'olaulea (music festival) at the Hilo Civic Center on Easter Sunday and continues all week with free noon-day entertainment at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel and Naniloa Volcanoes Resort. On Wednesday, there is a free exhibition night at the Edith Kanaka'ole Tennis Stadium that begins at 6:30 p.m. Thursday is the solo Miss Aloha Hula Competition, Friday and Saturday are the group Kahiko (Ancient) and 'Auana (Modern) hula competitions. There are arts and crafts fairs on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday at several locations. The big Merrie Monarch Royal Parade winds through downtown Hilo at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday. Except for the hula competition, the events are free."

RE: Hangin' in Puna - ArtM - 03-19-2007

Mahalo for all the suggestions.

We are aware of and very interested in the Merrie Monarch Festival, but we are going to wait until we are residents for that event.

The Astronomy Day was already on our calendar, but the May Day festivities were new, so special thanks for that! I will be keepin a close eye on the Tribune Herald, After Dark in the Park at VNP, and Hawai`i Island Journal for other events.

Oh! We are adding our own event to the calendar! We will be hosting a Punaweb potluck on Apr. 28. Mark your calendars and look for a separate thread with more details in a few days.

Mahalo,

Art M and family
