Mexican restaurant opening soon in downtown Hilo? - mailesomaha - 01-10-2012

We were driving to Garden Exchange and noticed the newly renovated building with the cute little pineapple decorations said something about becoming a Mexican restaurant.

There's really only 2 on this side...1 has food that is pretty bad and the other has pretty good food but is pretty gross aesthetically.

I'm crossing my fingers and toes for a really good restaurant!

I love, love, love Mexican food; Enchiladas, burritos, sopaipillas, tostadas....and please offer carry out and a bar I can sit at while waiting!!

That IS a really cute building...they've been working on it for some time now.

Hope it rocks!

I think they are planning a mix of Mexican food and Spanish inspired tapas, but the building owner's conflicts with the building Department may make it the slowest restaurant opening ever.

We recently went to a party catered by the folks behind the upcoming restaurant. One word: Yum!

Just up the street from there is an interesting place for burritos -- Bueno Burrito. We recently a very nice lunch there, and enjoyed the experience. It blends local with Mexican, though I didn't opt for the Kalua Pig burrito! Reasonably priced, fresh food, cheerful and friendly folks.

I second Jane on Bueno Burrito. If you like your food spicy then check out their lava salsa. Ono!

We were by the "Casa de Luna" (the pineapple building cafe) Sunday morning and they were working on cleaning & such,.

They hope to be open in 2 or so weeks, their fingers are crossed for a soft opening before Valentines Day!!

Actually there are more than 2:
Luquin's, Pahoa
Emma's, Shipman (you can get fresh tortillas in the back, too)
Bueno Burrito, Hilo*
Lucy's Taqueria, Hilo (a few doors down from Casa de Luna)
Rueben's, Hilo

My fave is Luquin's (Loo-KEENS), but have yet to try Lucy's, which had gotten some good reviews here since its recent opening. Rueben's reminds me of a place in, say, Maryland suburbs, that doesn't really know what Mexican food's supposed to taste like. My Hispanic friend says it bugs him that Casa de Luna should be Casa de LA Luna. Just sayin'.

Looking forward to the new one should it ever open. You can't have enough Mexican food around!

*He also had a booth at Keaau Market, but I'm not sure he's still there. Very personable guy btw. I like that they have coconut rice.

Sounds promising! [Smile]

Re using Kalua Pig, Kona Brewery has offered a Kalua Pig quesadilla for many years, and it is tres ono, so I can imagine it would work in a burrito too. The flavor Kona Brew has is just right.
