Oh dear, what to say? It's the same sunrise seen from two different CFHT cameras (actually three later on). The NNW one is actually pointing more to the north and the NNE one to the east so the scales at the bottom are off by quite a few degrees, but in any case the sun is rising perfectly normally in both - to the right in the first camera and head on in the second. Nothing to see here. You'll see the same thing every morning in those cameras.

You know, I wish I could do the accent of that bloke that suddenly speaks at around the 1:30 minute mark in the video - very dramatic and goes nicely with the haunting music. Unfortunately it's just a lot of nonsense but of course I have to tell you that because only those that work at the summit saw those two sunrises and have since been sworn to secrecy by NASA, so I can't say anything else. Sorry.

On another topic, does anyone know the best place for buying tin foil? I'm running short of the stuff.

I have it on good authority that if you bury a large metal garbage can lid in your front yard it has nearly the same effect as the foil hats and could work for all residents of the home.

I tried that and to enhance the protection wired it up to my tin roof - sort of a Faraday cage kind of arrangement. Since then my house has been hit by lightning several times so am reconsidering the whole project. What I need to think about now is how to orientate the tin foil. Shiny side up or down. It's quite a conundrum. If I don't want my brain-waves to leak out it's clearly shiny side down, but to prevent probing from government/alien space probes it has to be shiny side up.

Now you know why many observatories on Mauna Kea have shiny silver domes, it's because the spa.... OK, that's it, I've said enough already.

Incidentally, for those wanting to see really weird stuff from the MK webcams, not too long ago they caught a really strange looking thing which went a little viral and this one's also complete with mysterious music:

Turns out there was a very simple explanation for the event but it certainly generated a of interest at the time! By the way, I have no idea what an atmospheric flare is.

There really was a morning with 2 dawns recorded in China hundreds (thousands ?) of years ago.

Morning broke normally, but then there was a total solar eclipse BELOW the horizon. It got dark again for a few minutes and then a second dawn appeared.

It was thought to be just an old legend, but modern scientist traced back the history of solar eclipses and found one right where the legend said it happened in China. Apparently the Chinese recorded the exact date of the occurrence.
