Record tourist spending in Hawaii - EightFingers - 01-31-2012 http://www.staradvertiser.com/news/breaking/138351719.html Don't know what the BI's share of it was. The recession is over! Yea!!!![] RE: Record tourist spending in Hawaii - amf217 - 01-31-2012 Nice PR release but I always doubt goverment stats! I like it here in the shallow end of the gene pool RE: Record tourist spending in Hawaii - macuu222 - 01-31-2012 I wonder what kind of effect this will have on Hawaii tourism for the next year and a half!! http://www.staradvertiser.com/s?action=login&f=y&id=138282794 RE: Record tourist spending in Hawaii - EightFingers - 01-31-2012 I imagine anyone from a big city (like New York or L.A.) won't even notice. RE: Record tourist spending in Hawaii - Susan - 02-03-2012 Hubby and I going crazy on the mainland. We put airline tickets on fare lock while we decide if we can afford a week of sanity in Puna . Tourism must be doing great as we cannot find a lower cost, sweet little laid back rental for the end of February. Everything is booked. I had one lined up but was trumped by a request from a couple who wanted it for 5 weeks. No way would I blame them for taking the 5 week rental over my first request. RE: Record tourist spending in Hawaii - Kelena - 02-03-2012 A week of sanity..... in Puna? By the way, when I had a vacation rental, it was first come first served and I did not cancel a reservation accompanied by a deposit simply because I got a better one of longer duration. RE: Record tourist spending in Hawaii - Susan - 02-03-2012 It wasn't like that. I was not officially reserved. We were just "courting". No stress. Just saying how booked everything is for Feb-March. That's a good sign for the Hawaii Island. RE: Record tourist spending in Hawaii - KeaauRich - 02-03-2012 Kelena, We have the same policy at our vacation rental as you had at your's - whoever sends in their deposit first gets the place. In Susan's case, she and another renter both inquired about availability at about the same time, both were still getting their plans firmed up, and the 5 week renter came in first with a deposit to lock in their reservation. I was torn while I waited to see who'd commit first, because Susan is a return renter (and a PunaWebber!). But bigger forces were in play I think. Another party had rented the place for four weeks in late February/early March, but then had to cancel at the last minute because his best friend was just diagnosed with a brain tumor and given 2 months to live. According to our policy, if you cancel this late in the game, we only do a refund if we can rebook the cancelled time (especially in cases like this month when we had turned away lots of business due to the previous confirmed reservation). Because Susan's competition beat her to the punch and locked in the 5 week reservation (including the other guy's reserved four weeks), the guy who who cancelled is getting a full refund. He intends to reschedule his trip to come over in the fall. And we sure hope Susan and Dave will make it back to our place some other time too So yes, based on our rentals so far this year, tourism is definitely up! |
