Wood recommandation for park bench - macuu222 - 09-02-2012

I'm building an outdoor park bench on a concrete slab that will have no protection from the elements. Need a recommandation as to what wood holds up the best in our climate and what treatment/preservative measures to be applied to keep it that way? The supports are durable hard plastic...I just need 2x4's for the seat and back

GlenL has been in the wood boat building biz for years - this is what they have to say about wood selection.

Teak gets powder post beetles here - Gotta say, there probably is no perfect answer....as the elements, UV &/or pests seem to like just about every material we have looked at.....and remember the carpenter bees - all wood is OK to them... they even go after the composites & some urethane "wood" we have....and our bicycle seats!

best cost & durability suggestion may be to get the HiBor 2x4; treat the cuts per the mfg recommendation; re-treat the rest of the board w/HiBor... let it thoroughly dry; then soak with a wood preservative with mold/mildew resistance & be prepared to retreat with that preservative semi-annual - annually....

Not to be ohnery, but perhaps it would be simpler to build a small single pitch roof with repurposed 2x4s, some concrete footings, and old metal roofing.
Then you could use any materials you wanted for the bench AND use it if it was raining!

The bench is to be used as a place to sit in the backyard for nightime stargazing. It has to be roofless.

Natural wood is a poor choice in this climate. It will rot and get slimy with mold. Use an alternative lumber material. It won't rot but will also get slimy with mold.

Thanks Everyone. I finally purchased a state of the art Park Bench On-Line. Thermo-Plastic, PVC coating over steel which is rustproof, waterproof, bug proof, mold proof, and UV proof. I payed more but it will last a long time in the elements.... and is basically maintainence free
