Hawaiian Shores Rec Area - Auntie R - 02-18-2012

Debating putting an offer on a house in HBRA. Keep hearing conflicting reports on safety there. The block looks nice and it "feels" good. Anyone live in Hawaiian Shores and what do you think????

RE: Hawaiian Shores Rec Area - missydog1 - 02-19-2012

I can't tell which one you mean ...
There are four subdivisions
HSRE -- Hawaiian Shores Recreational Estates
Hawaiian Beaches
Hawaiian Shores
Hawaiian Parks (don't hear much about that one)

HBRA seems like a mix up of more than one? Does the one you're considering have CC&R's? HSRE does.

I imagine people will chime in, but you can find existing topics if you use the search function, and there is a lot of info. Here is one older topic:

Can't answer as to the crime, don't live there ... know a few real nice people who live there and don't complain.

www.city-data.com seems to be a site where crime stats are to be found. You can't really go by stats though.

Talking to the neighbors on the block would be a good thing, see if the impression you have holds up when you ask them?

Auntie R,

Just as we have "micro-climates" in Hawaii, so do we have "micro-neighborhoods." Some parts of HBRA are nice and some aren't. It all depends on your immediate neighbors.

We're in Hawaiian Shores and have great neighbors. But if we moved a block away I'm sure we'd be miserable. I agree with KathyH that you should talk to your neighbors. It would also be a good idea to hang around the area at night and check out the vibe after dark. Be on the lookout for crowing roosters, loud parties, and meth houses.

I live in Hawaiian Shores. Dont do it!! You will be sorry. I live where my neighbors will have a hair up their #$$ about anything. There are some that are okay but it all depends on who your neighbors are. Those stinkin speedbumps they put in at Papio have made it worst for all the people who live on Coastalppkwy. Nothing but scum crusing by now. The asscoiation sucks down here. Just had a girl screaming and fighting with her boyfriend about an hour ago on the pkwy street. Homes get broken into and there a long list more. My advice toyou, think before you do it!

RE: Hawaiian Shores Rec Area - punafish - 02-20-2012

Oh yeah, forgot to mention, watch out for those evil speed bumps too!

RE: Hawaiian Shores Rec Area - Devany - 02-23-2012

Ask your Realtor if you can make a night visit to the property. If the home is not occupied that should not be a problem. If it is occupied just go there and sit in your car for a few hours. And yes, go meet the neighbors. Pay attention to things like stray animals, roosters, junk cars, trash and general inattention to maintenance on surrounding homes. Punafish is quite right about micro neighborhoods.

RE: Hawaiian Shores Rec Area - macuu222 - 02-23-2012

The lot sizes are too small which means your right next to your neighbors and if you have noisy neighbors it can keep you up all night. I would suggest HPP...where each lot is an acre and gives you breathing space. And there are no speed bumps along the main drags in HPP.

RE: Hawaiian Shores Rec Area - punafish - 02-23-2012

It's true the lot sizes are small, ranging from about 1/4 to 1/3 of an acre. Although there are also some sweet lots near the ohia preserve, lots that feel like an acre.

I wouldn't characterize HS as better or worse than HPP. Both have pluses and minuses. And it's really a personal thing. I could live in HPP with the right lot, but I'd go in knowing that catchment CAN be a drawback (during those dry spells), as can spread-out lots that make it tough to watch out for your neighbors.

We have more than our share of warts here in HS, but it can be a great place in the right situation. We're lucky, we've got great neighbors and are adjacent to two empty lots.

My suggestion is get to know different areas and choose the one that best fits your personality.

RE: Hawaiian Shores Rec Area - Auntie R - 03-07-2012

Thanks all. It's Hawaiian Beaches I'm referring too. Seems ok....hung around at night, and the lady who lives in the house says she has never had a problem. Micro neighborhoods best describes.....

RE: Hawaiian Shores Rec Area - Chuysmom - 03-07-2012

We live in Hawaiian Shores Recreational Estates...it's nice here. Yes, the houses are close together...about 1/3 of an acre. We like it, but every street is different for sure.

Good luck!
