Tree poison
#11
Girdling does the trick, no need for expensive (and toxic) poisons. Good exercise too.

Would drilling holes on a downward slant and pouring poison into said holes do the trick?

That is one of the suggested methods. Holes only need to about an inch deep. I think it is safer for most folks, than whacking at the tree with a machete, especially if on uneven ground.

Agree w/Kapoho Joe about being careful what trees you poison. A giant albezia limb fell on friend's car the other day and broke the window.

I asked a similar question a while back.
I believe it was Rene Siracusa that recommended an herbicide that works very well for my needs.

I will not use herbicides indiscriminately on our property.
I only use one for getting rid of weed trees.
It has a very low impact on surrounding vegetation because of the way it is applied.

I cut my weed trees down with a chain saw.
Most of them are young trees I've let grow for a year or two so they get big enough for this to work easily.
I also us it for the large weed shrubs with smaller dia stems.

I put some of this herbicide into a leftover spray bottle.
Then, I spray the top of the stump left remaining after cutting the tree down.
Spray the cut top of stump immediately.
Don't let the cut surface dry out and/or heal before treating it.

I assume the sap wood it the most important part to spray.
But, I do the whole surface.
It kills the root system of Albezias, Secropias, Gunpowder Trees, and the roots of the two common large weed shrubs.
I have not used it on Miconia yet, haven't got any.
No stump I have ever treated has ever sent up new shoots to begin again.
I have had to go back and cut down new trees that grew from the stumps of trees that I had cut down before using this herbicide.
Every tree I've treated has died and gone to that great weed forest in the sky.

It is Ortho Poison Ivy Max Concentrate.
It is inexpensive.
I bought a pint bottle a couple of years ago or more at HD and still have almost all of it left.
I used it again on a couple of Secropias less than a week ago.
Still works like a charm.

For a larger stump top, it could be painted on with a brush.

Was a Democrat until gun control became a knee jerk, then a Republican until the crazies took over, back to being a nonpartisan again.
This time, I can no longer participate in the primary.
