"Back in the ATA days, their ITO-OAK direct . . . "
A decided lack of onward connections from OAK was a big limiting factor. Yes, there were some, but they were quite limited. Southwest won't have that problem, but we denizens of ITO will still have to either drive to Kona or make an extra connection.

That's the old days. And if you travel on your own time and money it is certainly about money and getting the best out of your trip. It involves an awful lot more than hours before and after the flights. You need to understand that people book these flights for a variety of reasons, not just what you think they do.

respectfully disagree Tom ...for me (and many) flying these days is an awful lot like dental work ..... the less time in the chair the better
If it were not about travel time - steamships or the Pan Am Clipper would still be popular
Its also why the A380 failed to catch on and the single isle jets are selling like hotcakes ....spoke and hub vs point to point ....
that is also why Southwest and Alaska Air is flying non stop to destinations in Hawaii (and many other places), rather than routing through hnl ....they know what the flying public wants

And now the news we've all been waiting for:
http://www.staradvertiser.com/2018/05/03...d-service/
Southwest " . . . said Wednesday it intends to offer interisland service as well and will set prices lower than currently available." They did not, however, mention Hilo as an interisland destination. Their CEO did some interisland flying and noticed what he described as "high fares."
In my own experience, Southwest's mainland fares for distances similar to ITO-HNL are similar to the lowest fares Hawaiian offers. This should be interesting in that Hawaiian's previous interisland competitors (including Aloha) have been small or weak airlines. Southwest is the big time.

I have the feeling after reading the article that Hilo will not be an inter-island destination initially. And that they will fly between the airports that service the mainland only.

This will be good for the competitive routes, where Southwest goes head to head with Hawaiian. It's possible however that prices on routes which remain a monopoly, served only by Hawaiian, may see increased fares to make up for lower profits on their other routes.

Wonderful news. Now I have a choice of airlines to fly to the real airport where I can catch the flight I actually need...
