Don't feel sorry for the person that decided to follow that path. Feel sorry for the ohana that couldn't talk sense into him while he did his drugs and or took his path in life.

Interesting procedure in that, when finding the stolen vehicle, instead of contacting all parties on the property, they hung back and called the homeowner first? Maybe it's just me...

Reading the release carefully, and a little bit between the lines, I get the impression the police officers didn't know the vehicle was stolen at first, and they called in to check if the people on the property were entitled to be there. I suspect it was during that call or afterward they found out it was a stolen vehicle.
