Join us at Pahoa Urban Food Forest (PUFF) on the second Sunday of each month to learn about the REAL Safeway, take a tour, and go home with free keiki of useful plants.

Backyard Grocery Store is a 12-part series:

- August 9: Eat the weeds
- September 13: Trees with edible leaves
- October 11: Staple crops
- November 8: Beans & peas for the tropics
- December 13: Taro & other edible arum
- ...with more to come, through May 2027

This month: integrating chickens in your foodscape. Chickens can devour bags of expensive feed while wreaking devastation on your gardens...or they can forage to feed themselves while increasing crop resiliency and yields. The difference is in design: how we guide chicken-plant interactions. We'll talk about barrier options for runs and paddocks, how to encourage foraging while protecting against predators, and how to grow a calorie-dense self-serve buffet for your chickens. If you have experience with what works (or doesn't), we welcome your observations in the discussion!

This month: You may be growing food without even realizing it. Many plants common in our yards and neighborhoods have edible leaves, flowers, seeds, fruits, and roots...and not only take no work to grow, but often deliver more nutrition than do domesticated crops. Learn about dozens of wild edibles, see many, and taste some. We'll discuss management & use of rambunctious plants (we want to hear your experiences and experiments too!), and the satisfaction of working with nature instead of feeling stuck in perpetual battle.

This month: Trees & shrubs outclass both annuals and herbaceous perennials in yielding the most nutritious vegetables, and they can produce abundant leaves for years or decades with minimal input. Join us in a discussion, drawing on Eric Toensmeier's freely downloadable *Trees with Edible Leaves*, of the whys, hows, and whos of growing leaf crops on woody perennials. Learn about, taste, and/or take home keiki of must-haves including bele, chaya, katuk, ofenga, chipilin, and many more!

We'll discuss ulu, air potato, coconut and other nuts, legumes, bananas, achira, taro & malanga, cassava, cucurbits, yams, inca nut, mint potato, leren, fiberless arrowroot, and probably more! We'll have keiki available for some of these staples. We'll also have keiki of many other plants.
