In general, brain development begins a few weeks after conception and is thought to be complete by early adulthood. The basic structure of the brain is laid down primarily during the prenatal period and early childhood, and the formation and refinement of neural networks continues over the long term.

have you ever read Herb Kane's work? … I especially like his observation about land..

Just an observation. Herb Kane, HiloJulie, and I all had our early brain development in the same neck of the woods.  We all moved across the continent, the Pacific, here to Hawaii.  Generalization? Are we and others like us Wiscohawaiians? Or the basis of further argument about details?  It is what it is. And I do love Herb Kane’s art work.

...failure of newcomers to assimilate into their host cultures...

It is a bit disappointing to now know that when my husband and I first came to Hawaii in the 1980's with then a teenaged son and daughter in tow, had I adopted my new hosts culture, I could have just strangled them for their misbehaving antics.

But my Wisconsin upbringing made me realize the little bastards can do much better at hard labor.
