WOW!!! Thank you so much for your time and patience. I definitely feel I know more about these kinds of systems than I did before THANKS to you, MarkP.

After describing how the MPPT charge controller increases the current while decreasing the voltage I failed to account for that in my calculations. If a string of three panels puts out 8 amps at 90 volts the charge controller would change that to around 13 amps at 55 volts so I was actually charging just fast enough, assuming that most of the solar output was going to the batteries rather than being used. Also the panel ratings are for ideal sunny conditions which I hardly ever see in Eden Roc.

Get a Flex Power 1 (outback) wired panel with Inverter and Charge Controller (outback quality and $3200 well spent). Then, you can get your golf cart batteries and panels 12 - 18 should be enough of them at costco. Just don't expect to run microwaves and hairdryers. Propane cooktop and propane tankless water heater is a must. You can get buy with a small 18 CUFT 1KW a day fridge. Get the most effient you can find appliances.
Hey eric, how many batteries and what volt for this system you described? Also, on the 18 cu ft 1KW fridge...where on the Big Island could you find it (if you have a brand and model # that would be so helpful)....thanks so much!
