Slab penetration for sewer
#1
Getting ready to order our steel building kit, and when discussing the slab penetrations with the supplier, they recommended routing the sewer through the wall instead of the slab to protect from the difficulty of broken pipes due to an earthquake. Has anyone here used this method of plumbing their slab on grade house?

Not trying to pick nits, but most likely you are going to a cesspool or septic...true sewer lines are rare.

We have both through wall & below grade drains in our house... The initial building of this SIP in the early '70's had special placement of the walls that are plumbing walls & had both water lines & drain lines embedded in the slab... one nice feature was cleanout access plugs in each of the plumbing walls.

The copper water lines failed years ago & were replaced with through wall plastic, we rerouted them to eave lines running into the walls..

Most of the drain lines are in the wall & embedded into the slab (& have survived the earthquakes of 1975 & 2006...) The laundry room line is routed out the wall... there are pros/cons with both. One of the main cons is that you will be replacing the seal between the pipe & the outside siding, as that seal has degraded way too fast (we have used a few different types, inc. 50yr sealant - most have silicone & one neighbor warned us that cockroaches LOVE silicone...)

Also, unless all of your closet drains are on a 2nd story, you probably will need a below grade drain or a special toilet.

What company did you go to for your kit? Is it a steel packaged home?
