Aloha Rob. You mean a 15' post has 10' above ground and 5' below?

You could use that as a rule of thumb but design conditions above grade and soil conditions below grade can affect that... which is why engineering is useful.
Assume the best and ask questions.

We made octagonal concrete poles for a pole house some years back. The owner never did build the house and the poles became walls for a garden bed. Too bad. They were engineered for a two story dwelling and had notches for the beams with bolt holes cast in the appropriate places. I've seen a lot of pole houses but the wood part always made me nervous. Concrete poles would be the ticket.
