pigs destroying garden

there is wide spread devastation to the forests on all islands from feral pigs. someone else pointed out that there was a backlog of hunters. i've heard the same thing. moloka'i hunters are up in arms over this issue as "outsiders" (i think from new zealand) have been permitted to tackle the problem.

It isn't logical to do throughout a large yard, however, for small garden areas or around certain plants I use red chile pepper flakes. Pigs "snuffle" the ground with their nose, perhaps their most accute sense, so when they snuffle a big snout full of hot chile pepper flakes... well, they don't soon forget it! I have used this technique in Arizona on the Javelinas as well as here with the pigs. It has worked great in both climates, I refresh the pepper every couple months just in case a new group of pigs comes around.

I've been reading the discussion about pigs (and goats in another topic) - but what's the local law/custom about such critters? If they're running loose and on your property are they consider feral? Can you really just shot/trap them without running into legal problems - seems I've heard Hawaii is pretty strict on firearms?

My neighbor snared a pig last night. He said he learned how as part of a survival course in the military. Amazing to catch such a large animal with what seems to be a small bit of string!

If a pig is trapped so it can't run off, a twenty two is fine to shoot it with. One really well placed shot will drop it, but usually it will take two shots. A higher caliber really wrecks the carcass, though.

Driving home from the Hot Pond Thursday at Dusk we got hit by a huge Wild Pig. Happened just North of the Vacation land entrance.. Black Pig with dark Gray Spots, at least 150+ pounds just ran out in the road as we were passing it. Must of been on a suicide mission I think.

Hit us soo hard thought the Airbags were gonna deploy!!!

We were in the pitch black darkness trying to get the front bumper cover that was wedged under the front of the car removed so we could drive it home. Was sooo much mud on the front bumper and everywhere I had to touch was wet and slippery. Was really bizzare the ground was dry, but I didnt worry about it, just wanted to get to a phone and call the insurance company/police to file a report.

When we finally made it home and looked at the damage...
I noticed all that mud was actually pig Poooop!!!
That big Pig pooped on my car when I hit it!!!
OMG!!! I was covered in PIG CRAP!!!!

[] LOL Was an ordeal I will not soon forget!!

I love our insurance company... parts are already ordered and the damage should be fixed by the end of next week.
Only caused $3052 worth of damage! [B)]


Could of been much worse as we had 3 young kids in the car.

I'm glad everyone is ok (except hog). Hitting a large hog can be very serious, if traveling at any speed. I hit a very large cow a few years ago. It came up the hood and took out the windshield, and then rolled off, fortunately. Lots of damage to my Mercury Marquis. It was in the body shop for a long time. When I got it back I found cow poop in the trunk. I never figured out how it got there. I was probably doing 60 when I hit it and it knocked poop everywhere. But in the trunk???. They almost totalled out the car. I was very lucky.

In Hawaii, the noose trap in any travelled squeeze spot (between 2 trees etc), is called a "Kipuka"!
They're considered Inhumane when set and left for days, but if in your yard or near mabe with a bell so you can kill em (or capture) quick are effective! Wire works best, but don't let em suffer! Any caliber is ok if shot in the head!
Again, might be illegal!
