Ended up cutting the stairwell into the deck of a covered lanai and made it a min of 36 inches so I wouldn't use up much of the area of the lanai. Worked much better than an exterior stairway for a number of reasons: won't wet rot, people stay dry going up and down, and no need to use expensive treated lumber.
