Wow, tsunami may be coming to top things off.

HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - The National Weather Service has issued a tsunami watch for Hawaii following a large earthquake near the Kuril Islands.
The watch was issued about 5 p.m.
The National Weather Service said tsunami waves may have been generated by a 7.8-magnitude quake.
Authorities are working to determine what the tsunami threat to Hawaii might be.
If waves are generated, the earliest arrival of tsunami waves would be about 10:40 p.m.

LOCATION - EAST OF THE KURIL ISLANDS
MAGNITUDE - 7.8 MOMENT
EVALUATION
BASED ON ALL AVAILABLE DATA A TSUNAMI MAY HAVE BEEN GENERATED BY
THIS EARTHQUAKE THAT COULD BE DESTRUCTIVE ON COASTAL AREAS EVEN
FAR FROM THE EPICENTER. AN INVESTIGATION IS UNDERWAY TO DETERMINE
IF THERE IS A TSUNAMI THREAT TO HAWAII.
IF TSUNAMI WAVES IMPACT HAWAII THE ESTIMATED EARLIEST ARRIVAL OF
THE FIRST TSUNAMI WAVE IS
1042 PM HST TUE 24 MAR 2020
FURTHER MESSAGES WILL BE ISSUED HOURLY OR SOONER AS CONDITIONS
WARRANT UNTIL THE THREAT TO HAWAII HAS PASSED.

I once read that anything under 8.0 at the edge of the Pacific is unlikely be a threat to Hawaii. Is that true?

The Washington Post has a scathing write-up about the NOAA Tsunami Center's malfunction last night. No website updates, wrong info, dysfunctional. Unfortunately I can't cut and past any text from their website.

website admins right now, because something is definitely broken; one West Coast info message, and nothing else — Hawaii had a tsunami watch issued, updated, and cancelled, but you wouldn't know it from checking their site.

Science? Who needs that? Nah, we ain't got any money for that kind silliness. More better we all stick our head in the sand (just be grateful we got sand) than know when one tsunami is coming our way. And besides, they come from so far away.. who cares?
