What to grow?
#1
My family and I are moving to the BI in January and we're interested in setting up a garden and maybe having a few animals (small) to help cut grocery costs. Any suggestions on what to grow and have?? I ask because although we've grown a few tomatos and carrots, we're not big gardeners, so any help is welcome!

Lettuce is big, tomatoes are questionable because of fruit flies that sting them (but in an enclosed green house they are the bomb) but cherry tomatoes seem to do better.

Depends on your lot. Much is on lava so no root crops...

I just introduced some super simple hydroponics to a few people; let's see how they do. Keep at it...

hmm there goes most of my experience in gardening. We were big carrot and potatoe gardeners for a while, mostly due to ease of growing... [Sad]

Not to fret... carrots can grow in Hawaii.

And Sweet Potatoes, Yams, Squash, etc. all grow really well here.

My father in law has been experimenting with a "Samoan Potato". One of these buggahs can feed a whole family. Seriously, one of his "potatoes" he grew weighed in at more than 10 lbs!.

Just to clarify... Lava rock can easily be turned to cinder which in turn eventually becomes soil and can grow root crops.

Remember... Taro is a root crop and thats been around in Hawaii long before we brought all these other root crops. [Wink]

If need... make a composting toilet and with a few releases, you have your own soil [Wink]

You may be right on the Tongan vs. Samoan. I'm not sure. I just remember seeing this huge ass potato and thinking damn....that can feed a village!

We just named it by who grew it, a Tongan man gave my wife one, it was like a monster sweet potato and cooked up real good! Definetly a survival food! 10 lbs is no stretch, at 1.89 a pound these suckers would bring 20$ one! They plant em in rows and use slips, followed by numerous hillings!

DrJ, one of the first things I planted after moving here last September, was carrots. I planted them in a container with soil and compost - they grew great! So don't forget about the possibility of growing your root veg in containers if you have rock underfoot. :-)

We finally planted today. Mostly flowers and bushes since we'll be moving soon and just wanted to spruce up the place. Hopefully the warm weather holds. I love being outside working, so I can't wait till the weather won't keep me indoors for half the year!!
