House Sitting
#1
Hello again,
Quick question. My significant other and I are headed your way after we rent for 6 months and really feel things out, just to be sure this is the place for us. Anyhoo, the reason we can live in Puna is our jobs. They are rotational jobs. 3 weeks on and 3 weeks off. I was wondering, how hard it would be to get someone to stay in our house at a reasonable rate for the times we are away? We are even looking at places with ohana cabins in the back. Perhaps to have a person stay in the ohana for a cheap rate, with the stipulation that they watch the house while we are away. I know you guys have a lot of part time dwellers, vacation home-ers, and rotational workers like us. Is this a common practice? Thanks for reading, have a great day!!

Question? If you are renting, will your landlord let someone else stay there for 3 weeks at a time?

Oops, sorry about the confusion.
When I rent (haven't started yet, still in Alaska) I won't bother with a house sitter, but when we get our own place, we will. I was just looking ahead to see if having people stay in houses while unoccupied, or having a "caretaker" kind of deal was common, and if anyone had any tips, horror stories, things to do, to not do, that kind of thing.

Thanks,

If you buy in my hood I'd be more than happy to keep an eye on the place if you don't find a sitter. At this point in my life I'm a stay at home wife/mom.

Aloha AKpilot,

I'm sure you'd have no problem finding someone to house sit. But finding someone you can TRUST to house sit is the challenge. If your house-sitter isn't trustworthy then you've got a potential nightmare on your hands. (Oh the stories we could tell!)

We travel and also require a house sitter not only to watch the house but also to take care of our dogs. Only family members and very close friends are allowed to house sit (fortunately we have both on island).

Not saying you can't find a good person, but please be careful!

Aloha, I have a very good friend who housesits and loves (babysit) my 2 dogs when I am on vacation. If you have pets, they will love her, a nd she leaves my house cleaner than I leave it! She is the best, trustworthy, have used her for over 5 years. If interested, call me...982-8145 for more info. Leilani

What about setting it up as a vacation rental with the "available" dates only being while you are gone? Most of the places I've seen on vrbo.com are way over priced considering the market. If you charge something fair you should have a good occupancy rate. And there are plenty of cleaning services to take care of the cleanup inbetween guests. I haven't looked at the realty market lately, but last I looked there were a couple of established vacation rentals for sale. There was a nice one near Volcano.

Thanks for the replies,
I would be in your region in the next 6 months or so. I'm a landlord myself here in Alaska, so I know how important picking people is. I also know how careful you have to be. I am still keeping my eye out in Wa'a Wa'a and Opihikao, my favorite areas. Anyone have any other large lotted (with house) area's to recommend?

I, for one, am entirely capable of house sitting. I am a single mother of a beautiful (and tame) 6 year old. I can either stay at the place, or check on it when ever you like. I also do yard work and take care of animals. I have my own car, and do not have a 'real job' as some would say. I am farm manager of a little place behind Pahoa, so am generally available. There is some houses available up Kaohe Homestead Road.
