Aloha,
I'm currently building a cabin in Fern Forest and trying to figure out the best way to get internet there. I'm thinking about a Yagi antenna and amplifier with a verizon card. Someone I know say's he has Hughes Satellite. This will be an off grid system. Your help will truely be welcomed, Mahalo

Hughes the pits.
- I opted to have them slam my credit report - rather than deal with them anymore - that bad
Verizon worked well for me up in fern acres - check your local "cell" though - many users can slow things down

We already have service with Verizon and I do get a bar or two when I'm up there, so I'm thinking an antenna set up would probably do the job. Thats too bad about Hughes.

Stay far far away from satellite internet. It usually sucks, but sucks even more when it rains which is often in Fern Forest.

A Wilson Electronics cell phone amplifier will boost your signal to 5 bars. $350 or so. I love mine. Works with tether or stick.

cell phone antenna worked for me, but not a Fern Forest resident. Best price 2 yrs ago was on Amazon (less than $350). Sure helps, but beware of gig limit.

hughes was good on content - impossible to deal with on the phone - This setup was on my mainland cabin - on 6 months a year & off six months - they could never get it turned on....or off in the right cycles
I have used that virgin usb thingy with good results "on the road btw" works well
went back to starband satellite on the cabin all is well there (in a canyon -no cell)
- a bigger dish will help the rain fade - but the satellite transponders were putting out 1/4 watt last I read - Telstar 7 - its a tough one to find - grin

I second the satellite thumbs down... you're still on a limit of 5g and the signal often drops. Plus you're paying the same monthly amount as you would for a Verizon tether or card (about $60/month) IN ADDITION TO the $600 - $800 for the dish! That's some craziness! But I've looked at it all, trying to figure out how to get decent internet out here. Up until a month ago, the best I could come up with was Verizon phone tether. Drops a bit, and have to unplug and replug it every 30 minutes or so, (same with the pc card, I tried that for years) but speed is decent.
Then I went to Cellular Enhancements and got their Wilson DT desktop amplifier/antenna. You mount the antenna on the roof, point it toward the west part of Orchidland or Hawaiian Beaches for Verizon. I went from zero - 1/2 bar to 3 full bars!! Finally! I tried a Mobi trial card and it looks like it has full bars where we are (I heard they recently put towers up hwy 11 all the way to Volcano?), I may switch to them since they don't have a limit on usage. I got the wireless mifi box about a year ago, but never was able to use it... anyone tried them yet? Customer service was awful last time I tried, out of Bombay or something... but if it works better, I'll put up w/ some of that.

YES, hughesnet sucks. We have it here at our HPP rental and it is slow as molasses. Hate it. Often it is out all together.
How is Mobi? where do you get it ?
