Waipio Valley

We have a Subaru Outback AWD. Any thoughts in doing that road down into the valley?

Should we risk it?

They don't allow AWD. But it's a good hike down on foot!

I've been putting off hip surgery, I think it would be a bad hike down for me.

It's one of the places we'd like to visit. Maybe I'll look into a tour, though we're not "tour" type folks.

An outback would be just fine to the bottom of the hill, you just need power not 4WD. Heading back into the valley you need ground clearance and 4WD.

You need a 4x4 with 4 LOW engaged so that you can go down the VERY steep road without using your brakes at all or else your brakes may fail in an AWD that does't have that capability.

Haven't gone down this year, last fall there was a guide/guard who checked out vehicles & also did some traffic monitoring. Do not know if they have been able to continue to fund the service.

For anyone driving or hiking down, it is always important to remember that the road is priority for the farmers that work the fields... It is always a good thing to give them extra room & courtesy (remember some of those trucks are hauling a full load of precious Waipio Valley taro up hill.....)

it didn't look like that road was wide enough for two vehicles, one going down and one coming up! It also didn't look like it had pullouts. The tour vans have radios back and forth so they know if the road is clear to go, I think I would follow one of them.

Subaru only has to Audi to kowtow to ... That said ... The boys at the top will not let you go down, no matter how you try to explain the Subie system to them. Yet, they will let So Cal visitors past in Jeeps who have no idea how to set 4WD, let alone drive in slippery conditions ....

Sounds like a good adventure to plan with kids when I get back from SoCal at the end of the month. Have a Toyota, 4 door, 4wd truck with a lift. It makes it fine. Can fit two adults and four kids inside no problem. Also hoping to go to Kole Koke park where the big rope swing is over the river running into the ocean. Kids have a ball there. Just hold on ?Dayna... the Lamont Summer Fun program is on the way!

I am thinking we can take a couple vehicles up the coast to Waipio and then let whomever in the back of the truck for the ride down. It is slow and easy... well, okay slow. But I have a brand new transmission (yeah, too many adventures) and it's going to work. Think a great Waipio beach day with a big picnic, etc....

We have done camping trips in years past and maybe plan one up to Hapuna beach.... Just old on! Even a day of visiting to the Lamont ranch with pregnant sheep, 50+ chickens, ducks, cows, a garden, greenhouse, orchad, etc... all on 30 acres might be a fun and crazy day. You ready for new grown up friends too???? Puna Lu'u black sand beach should be a good days adventure. /we can always take two vehicles to these kinds of places. There is a great surf beach filled with kids... but I would not take any teen, boy or girl, anywhere alone. We will do well because we will arrive in numbers!

As SBH said; You need a vehicle with a transfer case that you can manually shift into low range 4wd. Period. Anything less could easily be deadly. Short answer dayna; NO!
