On Maui it isn't the ranchers that are being devastated by the deer, it is row crop farmers who grow fruits and vegetables for domestic consumption and export. In this day and age would be political suicide for any governmental agency to try to reinstate the bounty on feral cats (there was one during the plantation era).

Cats are a special problem. Their advocates are irrational fanatics. I don't know how to address the issue. I agree that feral cats should be treated the same as other pests like rats but that will take political that is not in evidence.

In other words, we need to shift the blame away from the pilot and his patron, and put it all on the irrational cat fanatics? Great idea! (Easy for me to do as I'm not an irrational cat fanatic.)
Just kidding. Always interesting to entertain devil's-advocate viewpoints. (And good point about the cattle, Bullwinkle.)
I have two dogs, does that make me a dog fanatic? Dogs are certainly "non-native" animals but I don't consider mine "invasive", although I'm admittedly biased. My dogs catch rats and even an occasional mongoose, so I rationalize: they are doing their small part to control the rodent population. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

In some areas of the island, cats ARE treated the same as all feral animals (I have had to turn down internships because I am an irrational softee....HOWEVER we do spay any animal we take under our wing, have only taken in stray & feral animals & keep them confined...)
I do feel that all invasive introductions do some harm.... and the rancher named has been involved in the axis deer issue here for a LOOONG time, AND knowingly brought them in while knowing the federal & local stance on bringing in the axis deer (he has been to meetings & such, & KNEW WHAT HE WAS DOING WAS NOT WANTED).... IE: HE IS A VERY SELFISH MAN WHO WANTED TO PROFIT FROM HIS HUNTING INTERE$$$TS, not a dufus who had no idea what he was doing.... and the pilot also did know that what he was doing was not allowed, and the reasons..... so no, I do not see that it is equitable to compare an accidental, or long ago "innocent" introduction to a deliberate introduction motivated by his profit hunting interests

There maybe some science behind the irrational cat lovers...

There were some follow-on articles today. These can't be the only guys, since it is now estimated there might be over 100 axis deer on the BI. At first, the initial reports were doubted since how could axis deer cross the channel between Maui and the BI? Then there were more sightings and the Big Island Invasive Species Committee hired hunters to exterminate them. So far, the hunters have killed two. It also raises questions if hunters are introducing them and then being hired to exterminate them? Hmmm...

straying off topic a bit (axis deer) ....has anyone else taken notice of the boa constrictors found locally recently.
I read about another one the other day. reminded me of some work I did regarding sampling and analysis in a quality control setting.
The fact that they found two or three boas - makes me wonder how many more could be out there.......
Florida is having a nightmare of a time with them.

That wiggled and wiggled and tickled inside her.

Perhaps she'll die.

How absurd, to swallow a bird!
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider
That wiggled and wiggled and tickled inside her.

But I dunno why she swallowed that fly -
Perhaps she'll die
There was an old lady who swallowed a cat.
Imagine that, she swallowed a cat.
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird ...
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider
That wiggled and wiggled and tickled inside her.
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly.
But I dunno why she swallowed that fly
Perhaps she'll die
There was an old lady who swallowed a dog.
What a hog! To swallow a dog!
She swallowed the dog to catch the cat...
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird ...
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider
That wiggled and wiggled and tickled inside her.
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly.
But I dunno why she swallowed that fly
Perhaps she'll die.
There was an old lady who swallowed a goat.
Just opened her throat and swallowed a goat!
She swallowed the goat to catch the dog ...
She swallowed the dog to catch the cat.
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird ...
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider
That wiggled and wiggled and tickled inside her.
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly.
But I dunno why she swallowed that fly
Perhaps she'll die.

I don't know how she swallowed a cow!
She swallowed the cow to catch the goat...

She swallowed the dog to catch the cat...
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird ...
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider
That wiggled and wiggled and tickled inside her.
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly.

I would imagine that if they have found two or three then the cat is already out of the bag. Sad, but maybe they will eat some of the feral cats some here love so dearly.
