Just FYI those people that say you can just make your dog a service dog & fly it in cabin have no idea what they are talking about. . It's not going to happen. Pony up the cash find the best airline and fly your dog under the plane. From SFO in fall when it's not so hot. I love my Doberman but they say the only way he is flying in cabin is if we fly private. Anyone going our way I'll by the gas.
I know people who fly their large "service" dogs in the cabin on Alaska Airlines on a regular basis. The airline is not allowed to ask what the disability is, but they are allowed to ask what task the dog performs. If your answer is that the dog supplies "emotional stability" or something like that they are allowed to deny you and the dog because they can deny passage to anybody who is unstable. But just about anything else flies.

I love modern morals. At least when I'm doing something wrong I admit it to myself.

There are also emotional support dogs which are different than service dogs. Emotional support dogs need a doctor letter stating that the dog helps you in some emotional psychological way. The internet has doctors who will write this letter.
I don't think it's a real option because we checked into this and read all regulations.I am not going to post the source but someone in the system assured us that you really need to have a serious psychological disorder to qualify. There's a lot of "docs" out there who can promise whatever on the internet.
We ended leaving our dog on the mainland with a family member.Heartbreaking, but she wouldn't survive the trip.

I respectfully disagree on Ruth at Akonapet. She is useless. And rude. Don't call her. I did better the moment I cut the tie with her and did my own research and thinking.
My girl came cargo on Delta direct from LAX to KOA. They did a perfect job. She was in a 700 carrier, although she is only 50 lbs. She avoided the interisland problem. Interisland they take only a certain size carrier. In addition it adds hours to the travel time. Find a direct flight to KOA if you can.

I had a beautiful, glowing, attitude, brimming with beatitude. I was grateful that someone might assist with the most stressful aspect of a very, very complex move at a difficult time in my life. I was impossibly busy at the time and thought I needed her help. The first sign that her operation was not perfect was when I received paperwork intended for someone else. Things kind of went downhill from there. At the first sign of unjustified snippiness on her part, I ended contact and handled it myself. It was surprisingly simple once I turned my mind to it. When I arrived on island, my opinion about Akonapet was seconded by a person in a position to know.
I am glad you had a good experience, but I think mine was more representative. I am loathe to do or say anything that would impact a person's livelihood and do so only at the suggestion that the questionable guidance I received was as a result of a less than perfect attitude on my part. I support small, local small businesses like Akonapet, but I am so glad I didn't do it her way, at greater expense and in a way that I think would have been more difficult for my girl. If others have had a more positive experience, I encourage them to voice it.
My girl arrived on a DIRECT FLIGHT from LAX (not recommended by Akonapet), minimizing trauma to both her and I. Papa put her on the plane at one end, and Daddy picked up her at the other end. Five hours and 30 minutes not counting wait time in Los Angeles. She was off the plane in no time, as living cargo is offloaded first. The quite wonderful vet checked her out and then, to my girl's surprise, I appeared from my hiding place behind the car and we were reunited in mutual delirium after a month's separation (she stayed with my ex-partner while I got the place dog-friendly for her). Until that moment, I wasn't sure if I was going to like this place.
Akonapet had nothing to do with that truly joyous moment and instead simply underscored the adage that if you want something done right, do it yourself, with the kind assistance of a competent westside vet. I am pretty sure the competent westside vet would tell you the very same thing.

I fly a lot. And I have never, ever seen a large "service dog" loose, in the cabin of an aircraft. That's ridiculous. If they are tiny and can fit in a carrier under the seat in front of you, different story. But I'd be very surprised if you could put a large dog on a 5-hour flight in the seat next to you.
