How about a locally owned co-op general store? Safeway was bought out by Albertsons, and has consistently raised prices even before the buyout. Last three years prices have increased about 60% on certain necessary items. Their produce is bought in Mexico, then shipped "green" to mainland, expecting to "ripen" in the trailer or container for distribution from what I hear. Gas prices are at least decent if you buy groceries from them, so that, I believe, is the draw, besides "convenience" of variety.

OH do not get me going on Safeway! They do have good choices there but they are an insult to the poor folks on this island. They figure wtf! Many are on food stamps and they will pay any price they charge! Its true people will. I love there so called sales. BUY ONE GET SECOND FREE but what they dont tell you is they raised original price on the single item and hopw you do not notice it. They have a clever way of getting back same money they originally were selling item for but some of the dumbass public cannot see whats going on so They get away with it.As I said do not let me get going on this subject of Safeway. BIGGEST RIPPOFF MAINLAND RUN CORPORATION. $2.79 for a can of green beans. A tiny steak over $21 bucks. Everything in store is double or triple of anywhere else but we buy there!??No one ever complains. We lost our drive to protest anything anymore if this was another country the people would uprise and get store to be fair in their pricing. OK ILL STOP LOL It is a real big personal subject of mine mainly because I live on such little and so do many of you and stores like this make our lives harder

I only shop at Safeway on $5.00 Friday. And I only buy things on Friday that are sale priced. I live without for the other things that I would like that are way too expensive. Costco in Puna would be nice but it just ain't gonna happen. One Costco on Hawaii Island is all that's needed. Everyone from the Hilo side just plans a trip to the Kona Costco every couple of months.

All food prices have shot up 80% to 400% the past couple of years across the board. Canned goods that used to be .99 each are now 2 dollars or more. Even in the lower 48.

Personally I think it has to do with all that money the federal reserve has been dumping out of helicopters to their banker friends. Money just does not buy as much as it used to.

5 dollar fridays at safeway is pretty good.
CVS Longs has excellent sales on food stuffs.
KTA coupons is excellent.
Farmers markets way cheaper than any other food outlet.
Sales and coupons are actually cheaper than 10 years ago here in Hilo / Puna.
At HARA store in Kurtistown, yellow mainland onions very reasonable ,same with brews.
And also can grow much of own foods and fish and hunt,so actually as cheap as mainland,if not cheaper .
By living simply and not keeping up with the Jones with fancy this n that type gourmet diet, can do very well.
We recently noticed prices far less at Longs / CVS on canned goods than any other store on this side of island.
But we also butcher much of our own protein and not dependent on the barge and shipped in old nutrition.

Yes, a Real Store... By that I mean, a store for the people and run by the people. A not for profit store. But on the other hand carries all the goodies a modern store would. A store that has local produce in mind and with reasonable prices. A store where you shop knowing that the ingredients aren't the LOWEST quality influenced by the highest profit margins. A store when you shop you know you can feel good about getting your monies worth and at the same time knowing that the dollars you spend, are going back into the community by providing jobs form the locally grown products being bought with your money.

Why is it, I can buy Banana's all day long at a farmers market (locally candy apple banana type) for 75-1.00 a lbs yet, I walk into any other store and it's 150-2.00 bucks a lb non sale price? Profit...

Maybe I'm dreaming of "REAL" store and living in a pipe dream. But it would be nice wouldn't it? A win / win for everyone for a change.
