ericp - Used to have this sort of co-op type set up in Hilo back in the early 1970s.
Probably could be re done again if get enough people to volunteer to set it up and run it.
Abundant Life has this same concept and has recently bought the old farmers exchange building and will be relocating from bay front soon.
talk to the owner,i am sure she will totally welcome all your suggestions .

a store for the people and run by the people.....

I shudder to think of the theft from the shelves in starting a retail store in Puna .... Even though we we need one now that the hordes are invading the Foodland center .... not looking forward to welfare week - its crowded enough.....

"All food prices have shot up 80% to 400% the past couple of years across the board."

My guess is that's the part that's not true. Because it isn't.

ok, well Top ramen hasn't gone up that much. But
Between the start of the fiscal crisis to now.

Beef has gone up (100%+).
Chicken up 80%+
Canned goods, Up over 120%+
the list goes on and people see it when they go grocery shopping

Energy.. well thats a whole barrel of monkeys in itself.

They say we have low inflation, of course they removed all the factors which would count towards inflation to keep that number low. They removed fuel costs, food costs etc. Fuzzy math. And I dont know of many folks who's pay has kept up with this non inflation.

But this is derailing the whole topic..

I think a co-op would be a great Idea. But I dont see anyone stepping up to do it.

We are slowly being forced out of hawaii. Just like all the half million hawaiians who left the islands for a better life. Yes i agree with the figures presented. An average piece of steak can cost 4 hours wages for a minumum wage earner!I LOVE HAWAII but I hate hawaii. It has put me in a strangle hold financially but on a bright point, it keeps the rest of mainland scum types, trailer trash types from invading hawaii

Well Haoleboy, I have to respectably disagree about the wages and economic health of this Island. I was having a little chat with a plumber in my kitchen the other day and he seemed happy enough.

After he gave me his bill for unclogging a sink, I (in shock) informed him that I was a world renowned Surgeon, and didn't make as much money.

He just grinned at me and replied; "I know pal, I used to be a Surgeon".

Went to safeway today for 5$ friday.
After paying and looking at receipt, they over charged us on several items, came to almost 16$ plus tax.Went to service desk and explained situation, they know what is what and refunded us almost 17$ .
better check your receipts each n every time cause most places do this.
Cost of foods in those type outlets are higher as they tack on charges most overlook.
We do not eat store beef, most is redslime irradiated rubbish shipped in from mainland .
We butcher our own.
But gasoline did drop a whole 2 pennies since last week at safeway per gallon.
