Shockwave rider - did they directly mention air quality as playing a role in these illnesses?

I do not think they have enough data to authoritatively state that connection, there is congruence but not causation at this point.

That's how it was stated to us as well. DOH is supposed to handle the epidemiology and pull all these incidents together to help determine causes and possible responses...

If anyone manages to get a response from them, please share it here. Several calls and emails over the last couple weeks has not prompted even a call back.

Hypochondriacs are always entertaining...

PS in reality, most lung issues in Puna are related to bong activity

save our indigenous and endemic Hawaiian Plants... learn about them, grow them, and plant them on your property, ....instead of all that invasive non-native garbage I see in most yards... aloha

If my screen name may indicate a tendency for verbosity, does yours indicate a phallic-shaped cranium? Wink

Nancy he said he lived in Kapoho for the past eight years. BH there was a time I might have been inclined to agree with you but I know for a fact bongs and such are not the cause of the "cold" my husband and I have had a couple of weeks now. Also, when I went to the doctor the waiting room was filled with others who ranged from babies to really old people, many of whom sounded like me. I hardly think a three year old is doing bong hits! Nor is the 70+ year old granny! It was a pretty frightening sight to see so many in the waiting room and most had a cough. Although doing something beats doing nothing, I feel advice to dip cloth in baking soda and hang over window openings is lame. I can't believe that as long as volcanos have been a part of human history (uh, since day #1, I'm sure), there isn't enough data from anywhere to give sound and concrete advice.

Vog coming from Puu Oo goes Southwest, out to sea and back over kona side. If Vog came from the flow farther down the hill, it would smack into Nanawale and the rest of lower Puna :-(

Of course this may not be in the budget, the design of your house might not be set up for A/C, and you may not have moved here to stay indoors all the time, but a dehumidifier for when it's cold or A/C when it's warm can really improve air quality in the conditioned space.
