Hilo Airport - highly rated by the BBC!

Wonderful story, Jon, thank you. At least I got it a bit right and there was a chess connection!

I used to love chess and became interested decades ago while still in the UK. At the time, Nigel Short played Kasparov for the World Chess Championship. Although he lost, the match was a huge event in the UK and was shown on prime time TV. I even bought myself a chess computer (I still have it - this was before cheap computers and apps!) but never mastered the game. Just about all my good moves were by mistake...

It's a wonderful game! There is a huge (not huge in number of players, but huge in that they have ten of the worlds top chess players) going on right now in London. The current world's champ, Magnus Carlson of Norway, Vishwanathon Anond, the ex champ, of India. Two top US players, and Grandmaster Mickey Adams, from England, etc, etc.

We still have a modest club meeting Saturdays, 9:00am to 1:00pm at the Hilo Library. Also, I still teach beginning chess there, should anyone want to get into the world's best game, and at E. B. DeSilva Elementary School, after school through the PTA. All are welcome at the library, no matter your playing strength, and no charge.

Doing what I can to get more people to play right here on the big island!

I have 16mm footage of the finale approach and landing of a Navy Super Constellation (VR8) taken from the plane by my Dad. 1956. Landing at Hilo.

I've always enjoyed this video, taken from presumably the flight deck of the daily FedEx flight into Hilo.

Flying the approach to Rwy 8 into Hilo is No ka oi. Although flying into the old airport in Hong Kong was very exciting.

Unfortunately, the FedEx plane hasn't come to Hilo in almost 2 years. Was always fun watching that steep ascent just after takeoff.

I didn't realize that, but now you mention it, it's certainly been a while since I last saw it.

The state just spent $$$ on new air cargo facilities at ITO, so I wonder who else flies cargo flights into Hilo since FedEx doesn't anymore?

FedEx still flies in and out of Hilo with a smaller plane that meets up with their big plane in Honolulu. Aloha Cargo is the largest inter island freight carrier, and Trans Air is also a major provider. Hawaiian Air flies quite a lot of freight on their passenger planes, UPS moves a fair amount of freight as well, but they drive to Kona to then fly their boxes to Honolulu.
