dengue fever could be here to stay
Didn't want to make a new topic and seems to fit here...

So...

Found it about interesting to hear the senator's thoughts vs. county and hawaii state health department.

Kinda sad that they think that everything was done correctly and timely ... when we all know it was not. I am a resident here, and the only reason I know of "fight the bite" was from a UH email. Other wise she is just blowing smoke out of her ass. Oh well, I truly believe if it was Oahu it would have been handled a lot better.

Here's a pest in Oregon that's not even making people sick but they are spraying 8,000 acres from the air.

ETA: "The cost of spraying will likely involve several aircraft and the Oregon portion of the project is expected to cost $2.5 million, Burfitt said.

Spraying will also occur in southwest Washington at a cost of $3 million, he said."

Here's one from the history books:

http://www.nytimes.com/1981/09/09/us/us-...fight.html

1,200 square miles sprayed with malathion to kill a fruit fly. Though, I don't know if that was the full extent of the spraying.

In other words: if there is a will, there is a way.

ETA: I remember Reagan going on TV to announce the spraying.

Love the hazmat suits they're wearing. I've a mind to buy one, wear it to the airport, and distribute "Fight the Bite" flyers. If any of the tourists ask, I'll swear that THERE IS NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT.

I would love to see that! However, you know you won't be able to reach everyone.

I am unable to discern where the new cases are. The map is not detailed enough. From a cursory look it seems there are no new cases in Puna. It seems to be a disservice for the county to not be more specific. Is there some public site which is more detailed as to where the risk is highest?

Well said. I'm sure when they map out unpermitted taxable structures the maps will be very precise.

The map is not detailed enough.

Oh, yes, the problem is obviously lack of detailed maps.

"This map should not be used to exclude any areas of the island from proactive mosquito control measures. All residents islandwide are encouraged to Fight The Bite by reducing mosquito breeding grounds and protecting themselves from mosquito bites."

If you read this disclaimer for the map you should be able to understand that there is no need for a more detailed map.
