Pahoa Post Office
#1
Anyone know what the hours are today for the Pahoa Post office? Wondering if they're going to close early since Obama decided to give federal employees a half day paid holiday today.

Looks like you have to look for the posted sign on each office, though it should at least be open until noon. Their web site says:

Christmas Eve
Local Post Offices™

Post Offices nationwide will be open Christmas Eve, Thursday, December 24; however, many will shorten lobby hours and close at noon.

Local holiday hours will be posted at each Post Office. Business customers, please check with your Bulk Mail Entry Unit for hours of Operation.

Customers requiring postal services later on Christmas Eve should contact their local Post Office.

USPS Collection Boxes

Blue collection boxes with final collection times before 12 p.m. (noon) will not be affected by the early closing on December 24.

If boxes have final collection times after 12 p.m., their mail may be picked up earlier. Please deposit your mail into blue collection boxes by noon on December 24, regardless of the final collection times posted on the box.

Customers requiring later pickups on December 24 should visit their local Post Office.

Regular Mail Delivery

Although many Post Offices will close at noon on December 24, mail will be delivered as usual.

Christmas Day

Post Offices will be closed on Christmas Day, Friday, December 25. Regular mail will not be delivered that day.

New Year's Eve
Local Post Offices

Post Offices will be open regular hours on New Year’s Eve, Thursday, December 31.

USPS Collection Boxes

Blue collection boxes with final collection times before 12 p.m. (noon) will not be affected. If boxes have final collection times after 12 p.m., their mail may be picked up earlier. Please deposit your mail into blue collection boxes by noon on December 31, regardless of the final collection times posted on the box.

Customers requiring later pickups on December 31 should visit their local Post Office.

Regular Mail Delivery

Mail will be delivered as usual.

New Year's Day

Post Offices will be closed on New Year's Day, Friday, January 1.

Th Pahoa Post Office is a joke. The parking lot was designed by drunk people, there should be a 3 way stop at Post Office Road and Pahoa Village Road, the staff are mostly half asleep, the counter area is too cramped, etc. Honestly, I have not gone to the Pahoa Post Office in years and I feel badly for the people who have to use it.

The staff are the best part of the Pahoa Post Office! They do an incredible job within a horrible infrastructure. Every time I stand in line I marvel at how they don't "go postal" but instead keep on keeping on with kindness..

Cheers,
Kirt

I agree, total saints or will be by retirement from dealing with the general delivery crowd.

HOWEVER, enter the drive thru mail drop lane at your own peril, it appears to be too sophisticated for some residents, similar to their problem with merging lanes. Enough locals think it means they can park there while going in and standing in line. When I asked a lady why she didn't keep driving with cars backed up behind her, she answered her kid was inside and everybody uses the drive thru as a loading/waiting zone. It's a bit hard to back out from there, but I've done it twice.

I love Puna and the Big Island yet think the greatest challenge here is not the Volcano or hurricanes, it's that a lot of folk need to get off the island every now and then to gain a greater perspective.

"...get off the island every now and then to gain a greater perspective."

Great advice for anyone from anywhere who has had limited exposure outside their locale.

I think the pahoa PO is just as good as any other PO on this island...

That being said, one reason I choose to live in beaches was to have a physical mailbox. I think if I lived in an area like HPP or Orchidland where I have to drive to PO to get mail... I'd be singing a different tune, yes I know some people have boxes on the side of the road, but not all. I just like walking down my driveway to get my mail. Feels like I'm living in the 21'st century. Other than that, when I do have to mail a box at pahoa's PO, I think they are doing a pretty good job overall.

I have also encountered those self-absorbed all-important folks who believe that the universe revolves around them twice at the Pahoa PO (referring to the people who park in the drive-through) and had to back out, mostly driving blind around that curve back into the street into traffic (where *I* looked like the @sshole). And I hardly ever go to that PO, so I assume it must be something that happens all the time.

I am envious of people who have home mail delivery, I knew that I was going to miss it (along with "real" internet) but living in Puna is about finding that "sweet spot" that meets a particular person's needs. Getting the acreage we wanted with postal street delivery, "real" internet, at the price we could pay wasn't possible. Fortunately after 3 years we did eventually get "real" internet, even if it is at a ten-year old DSL speed. I fear that postal street delivery however, will never happen. The USPS usually doesn't offer home delivery in new subdivisions any more (only cluster boxes), and in some areas where they do have home delivery, they are trying to put up cluster stations and discontinue deliveries at each residence. So I don't think it will ever happen here.

there should be a 3 way stop at Post Office Road and Pahoa Village Road

Supposedly the Post Office road will be extended through to the new $50M park, despite the fact that Post Office road is completely substandard (as in, less than half the required width).
