Such a shame....
I dunno why people feel the need to drive 65-70 on the new two lane roads. Though, I'm not surprised much seeing how people pass me on Kahakai... Seems more enforcement is needed. I've only seen one cop enforcing speed on Kahakai since I've been in this subdivision. Drive it almost daily.

It looks like this guy had just moved to the BI from Oahu and has a good-size list of traffic violations. It's not hard to get speeding tickets here where there are a lot of speed traps, weird speed limits, and cops sitting around waiting for something to do, but on Oahu you really have to try to get pulled over. Has a previous fine for causing an accident as well.

One thing I took away from the road closure is that there really are no functional alternative routes. As bad as it was, can you imagine if it happened when school was in session AND a lot of people weren't on holiday leave?
My condolences to those who lost a loved one or dear friend in this accident yesterday. The inconvenience of using Ainaloa and 8 rd as an alternate road for accidents could have been much worse or at least slower in the old days. Like when we use to have a locked gate at the top of ainaloa or have to tip the gate keeper a buck for using his yard to go around the gate. Let's hope these types of accidents don't become more frequent with the increase of traffic and speed through that section of highway.

I was wondering how you learned all these details, none of the news reports I read indicated much beyond age and city of residence.

Yes Gypsy, let us use that age old problem solving technique - Hope!
Or maybe, just maybe we can convince the State/County powers that be to start using eminent domain and buy/build us a true alternate/emergency route out of lower Puna.

The Interwebs got all the data apparently. You only need to know where to look. Or let others look for you and just come to PW...

Well I am a pretty good researcher and found no indication of any of that information on readily available public sites, but PW has had more than a small amount of incorrect BS posted here too. Not saying that is the case here, but I wanted to know what the source was.

If you go to the Hawaii State Judiciary website there are several searches available to view a person's court records. Ecourt Kokua will provide you access to traffic cases, district court criminal and appellate cases. Ho'ohiki will provide you access to criminal and civil case information filed in the Circuit and Family courts and certain civil cases of the District Courts.
