Hi I just bought a property on the 10th ave HPP. There are wonderful posts on this website and I really appreciate them, as it is full great information and very helpful. Thank you everyone.
I saw a post earlier that mentioned how to plant trees in this area--land with hard shiny lava rocks. It said build a circle of rocks, fill it with soil to create a planting medium. Any idea how deep/high the circle of rocks need to be --i.e. should it be 2 feet/3 feet deep/high?

Congratulations on your purchase! I guess it depends on the root system of the tree. Some have shallow roots, but others may require a deeper hole to accommodate a taproot.

The best time to plant trees is now in late summer, early fall, when fruit is all over the place.
If you plant trees when food is not plentiful in the jungle, the pigs will dig up everything you plant looking for worms. They may even eat what you plant.
When fruiting season ends, let the weeds cover your planting until fruiting season again. A manicured planting site is a red carpet for pigs. Established plantings will be fine under the weeds, and when you finally mow they make great mulch. Find them again with a leaf rake.
Wild pigs are a big issue in Puna if you are trying to grow anything.
