The TMT International Observatory Board of Governors met last week to discuss the project’s progress in Hawaii and identified Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos on La Palma island “after careful deliberation,” board chair Henry Yang said in a statement.
Hawaii’s Mauna Kea is still the preferred location, Yang said, adding that telescope officials will forge ahead in efforts to obtain a permit to build it on conservation land.

Good. Hawaii does not deserve the TMT.

If the TMT does wind up relocating to the Canary Islands, I suggest we amend the 18th century historical name of Hawaii. In keeping with the bird theme (Canary), henceforth we should be known as the Chicken Sandwich Islands. In honor of our state government officials.
I saw the tracks immediately - they swirled back & forth across the shuffled sand of the path. They seemed the design of indecision, but I am not sure. Mary Oliver

What, then, does Hawaii "deserve"?

After reading the following statement by one of the head protesters I had to Google La Palma and then I had to chuckle !
“I’m glad they’re looking at alternative sites,” Kealoha Pisciotta, one of the leaders challenging the telescope, said during a break in the hearings. “I have to say if they do go with the alternative site, I hope they don’t do there what they’re doing to Native Hawaiians and the people of Hawaii.”
From Google
After the Spanish occupation of La Palma, the native Canarians vanished by either being killed, sold into slavery or by assimilating into the Spanish population.
They also promote star gazing as a tourist activity :

I have talked to Hawaiian Independence advocates of various stripes, and listen to "The US will pay us reparations"
or "The US will pay us rent for the bases on Hawaiian Soil"
Remember one thing- in WW2, the US interned 110,000 Japanese-American CITIZENS of the US for an alleged and chimerical threat to US security.
What do you think might happen with anyone who is portrayed to threaten the "Pivot to the Pacific" vis a vis China and Russia for whatever reason?

"The US will pay us rent for the bases on Hawaiian Soil"
With today's military hardware, Hawaii's relative proximity to "the East" is no longer relevant.
