I do know better in this instance. And I know the cast of characters.
And I find the ignorance, BS and ineptitude of many of the players breathtaking.
We are squandering one of the few assets that we have on this island for what?
For what?
Hawaii is about to become a failed state worthy only of global ridicule and disgust.
Why? Because a tiny band of fanatics lawyered up to confront a failed government and incompetent judiciary in court with a collective hallucination from another historical era.
I feel sorry for the kids here; especially the ethnic Hawaiians. One of the few things they might take pride in; a gleaming reflection of a proud heritage as stargazers and navigators into the 21st Century, something that might connect them to the larger world as worthy and honored participants in humanity's highest aspirations, is being taken away by narcissistic imbeciles. So some dreamers and race-baiters can celebrate a 'legal victory' and dress up in costumes and take selfies with each other.
Like setting your children's future on fire and celebrating victory when it burns to the ground.
Every child who reads of TMT on the Canary Islands making another profound discovery about the universe is going to feel sick somewhere in their gut for generations. Their only refuge will be to burrow deeper into ignorance and fantasy.
Celebrate that.

Hawaii ... worthy only of global ridicule and disgust.
With each island embodying the traits of a celebrity personality:
Kauai: Rodney Dangerfield
Oahu: Don Rickles
Maui: John Waters
Hawaii: Divine
But... at least we'll have that going for us.

TMT project Could be moved to India... to help "benefit" the people of India or China.
India is in the midst of an economic crisis. Might the solution be to send the TMT to their country?
1) Let's look at a local situation for a comparative example. Puna has a crisis of poverty among many of it's residents. Would the problem be solved if we gave each of those residents a dollar?
2) India has a billion people. The TMT project is estimated to cost $1.4 billion, but those expenditures are spread out across the world to contractors building different parts of the telescope.
Let's say for the sake of argument, the TMT is built in India, and $1 billion is spent in that country. Will $1 per person across the subcontinent of India solve their economic difficulties?
Pass the turkey, please.

And the effect of $1.4 billion, plus the daily, weekly, monthly and yearly salaries, wages, etc., direct and indirect on the 200,000 +/- people of the Hawai'i County?
A lot of turkey and more I think, year after year.
Gypsy69's dismissive quotation marks ("benefits") @ 8:30:41 is exactly the ignorant BS that is being used by the "protectors" and friends. Totally irrational and destructive.
Nonetheless, my best wishes to all Punawebbers for a happy and gratifying Thanksgiving holiday.
