What did they do with all the entry fee money gathered previously?
They're still saving up $2M to build a facility (that won't serve haoles).

Methinks they are starting to choke the goose that laid the golden egg. They are initiating a change just at the point where the clientele had adjusted to the previous change. Expect even worse traffic tie-ups now that folks will have to stop to dig out a second bill and/or wait for change. I quit going there after the second time in a row traffic was badly backed up when I went. Lots of other places to get stuff.

Does that include the price of a car/bus ride, gas, time ? Shop Local
Yes if you're going but a week's worth of veggies it does now pay to drive to hilo, they have it on Wednesday too. stopping by Suisan on the way thru is Icing, the puna price gouging has gotten ridiculous, can't imagine what the prices are going to be at the new Malama market

Keaau market seems just fine to me. Easy in and out, good prices, open every day, no fees, free parking.

"I hope their increased fees cause a huge drop in attendance."
Their increased fees should go towards paying fines for when the traffic backs all the way up to Ainaloa while people count pennies or whatever to get in, turning a 5 minute trip to Pahoa into a 15 minute one.

Maku'u Market should be shut down until State installs a traffic signal at Orchidland Drive.

Did they get the proper permits for adding "Paid Parking Lot" to their "Tarp Covered Stalls" rental business?

I'm thinking someone is gonna get in a bad accident there.... Hope Mukua has good insurance. Most likely the state will shut em down when it happens.
Could all be avoided, if they HIRED 5 people to take the now two bucks for parking. But.......too greedy I guess.
I haven't been there since they started charging a buck.... I sure as heck won't be going for 2 bucks. Like everyone else has said, Mukua is the worst place to buy produce. They figure the rich freaks that paid two bucks can pay a primo price on produce as well. Nope... I always went to just walk around the tables. Rarely did we ever buy anything ...even when it was free.
For me, Keaau 80% of the time, and 20% at hilo works for me and feel much more "local" than Mukuu... Good for tourist not for locals.
